Did Roy Jones start losing at LHW when his competition stepped up?

To answer the question: Yes.
But thats not to say he wasnt deteriorating already: He was. He just also happened to run into some of his better LHW competition when he was fading.
imo, Roy always had a bit of a problem against clever southpaws. Most people dont remember, because it was pretty much a snoozer, but he had a pretty difficult time against Eric Harding, and Harding injured his bicep very early in the fight.
Not to mention losses to Tarver, and him being dropped and hurt against Del Valle, who was ok but a pretty unremarkable southpaw.
Still, someone with his talent could most of the time deal with those opponents anyway. For example he totally schooled less skilled southpaws like Richard Hall.
Really depends on the opponent.Last edited by Steak; 05-10-2012, 04:48 PM.Comment

That's unfair, with his sound fundamentals and defence I feel Andre Ward would give Roy a tough fight. I also feel he'd have a difficult night with Chad Dawson.
Fighters I feel would beat Roy Jones, and fighters I give a chance to.
At MW,
Jake LaMotta
SRR
Marvin Hagler
Charley Burley
Carlos Monzon
Harry Greb
I also give chances to
Thomas Hearns
Mike Mccallum
Gerald Mccellan (beat Roy in the amateurs)
At SMW
I give chances to
Joe Calzaghe
Chris Eubank
Nigel Benn
Gerald Mccellan
At LHW
Billy Conn
Bob Foster
Michael Spinks
Ezzard Charles
Archie Moore
Dwight Muhammad Qawi
Michael Moorer
There are obviously fighters I've missed, this is just off the top of my headComment

I'm surprised this ****** thread made it this far.
Jones won because he's one of the supreme fighters of all time; not because he lacked competition.
Silly silly thread.Comment

Well, I dont think its too unfair to suggest that if guys like Bob Foster, Ezzard Charles, Moore, H Johnson, Spinks were around, Roy would have lost a lot more.
But thats a very unrealisticly stacked division. And if lesser fighters than Tarver were around while Roy was starting to fade around 2003, then he could have continued his winning streak for a while more.Comment

Put it like this. Roy wacks all those guys head to head. No one beats a prime RJJ P4P. No one.Well, I dont think its too unfair to suggest that if guys like Bob Foster, Ezzard Charles, Moore, H Johnson, Spinks were around, Roy would have lost a lot more.
