I think Martinez is better than Bute, but the size difference would be too much since Bute is no scrub. There's a difference between fighting a big guy who's not AS good at a lighter weight class, than fighting a great big guy. Honestly, it just doesn't make sense. At a certain level of competition, size DOES matter. It's the same reason nobody should realistically expect Martinez-Pac to happen. Pac MAY possibly (up to debate) be better, but Martinez is good enough to where the size will matter. The only reason Pac is ever brought up by him is because of the way Pac went about getting Martinez's title...he wanted Foreman's title til Cotto beat him..then backed off the 154 talks til Martinez "vacated"...Anyway.. Same thing with Bute and Ward..ESPECIALLY Ward and his smothering and sometimes "dirty" ways (I'm a Ward fan, don't take offense).
Dibella is jumping the gun though with his comments and again making Martinez look bad. Let Martinez handle his business, challenge who he wants, and if they don't want the fight, then step in and do your job. Martinez is trying to get a "legacy" fight in before retirement, it's obvious. Martinez doesn't shoot up to #1 p4p with a win over Bute. He does with a win over Floyd and gets paid..and will get SERIOUSLY paid the fight after. If Martinez were to beat a Floyd, it would be remembered for a long time. If he beats Bute...who cares? Nobody outside of Canada likes Bute (exaggeration), and Ward is better than Bute. Ward and Martinez, all things being equal would be a great fight. But Ward holds a noticeable advantage in size. Until Martinez fights a 168 pounder or fights at that limit, I don't know why people are hating on him. Ward beats him, not because he's guaranteed the better fighter, but because how good he is in combination with how big he would be in comparison. Chavez Jr nobody cares about because he sucks and it's a winnable Martinez fight despite the size, but he just so happens to hold the green belt that Martinez (even before Chavez Jr was int he picture) has dreamed of and holds great pride in that belt..according to him that is.
Still amazed people think he went life and death with Macklin. :|...
