So if the only footage of Floyd Mayweather was the footage of him being hurt by Shane Mosley in the second round of their fight and someone where to say he's just an ordinary fighter based on that 10 seconds of footage that would be ok to you?

You consider someone judging a fighter off that short clip to be a logical idea?

I don't know what Scully was expecting, but I was not expecting to see Margarito or Mayorga-like wide punches being thrown either.

How terrible. I'm usually on the side of old fighters being better than new fighters. I just can't see how this guy would be any better than what I saw. I would like to see more footage of him, like a whole fight at least, and see what we are missing out on, but only to make fun of him.

WTF, how many times did he fight Charlie Burley and Cocoa Kid?

Looks like they make up at least 15-20 of his pro fights.

I just signed in to say that IronDanHamza is one of the most knowledgeable and respectful posters on this site.

I'd put up him right up there with perhaps Steak, Silencers, and JAB as the posters with serious knowledge of the sport on this site.

And because I don't know as MUCH as them, I'm always willing to read information they post regarding fighters from BEFORE the 60's and 50's.

I know a little about everything, but some posters here just absolutely dwarf me in boxing knowledge.

            My goodness

Never heard of this guy till this thread, and honestly don't care to hear about him again or see more footage on him.
Interesting you came to that conclusion after 15 sec of video.....

I'd say it's a little unfair to base a fighter's in-ring ability and skills off such a short clip.

I mean, by the time he fought Young Gene Buffalo in 1941 Williams was already heading up to 100 fights.

I'm not arguing that Holman Williams is a super technichan and has the skills of Ray Robinson or Floyd Mayweather. Because I personally have not seen enought o judge him like that.

But, he was a great fighter.

You don't beat the likes of Archie Moore, Charley Burley, Bert Lytell, Jack Chase, Jose Basora, Lloyd Marshall, Eddie Booker and hang with the likes of Marcel Cerdan and Jake Lamotta and not be a great fighter.

He has an exceptionl resume. Not a Top 20 ATG level fighter in my personal opinion but a great fighter nontheless.

That's actually a very good point.

Imagine if something like that happened 100 years from today...

People would be like, "Greatest defensive fighter? He just got hit with a wide, telegraphed, right hand...TWICE."

Now that we're talking about old fighters, and please feel free to disagree...

Isn't it safe to say that Joe Louis wouldn't have survived in the heavyweight era of the 60's/70's?

There's plenty of footage of him but he looks SOOOOOOOO robotic in his fighting style.

I've never actually sat down to METICULOUSLY watch his fights round-by-round but he looked slow and hesitant whenever he fought. He looked like the kind of fighter that would've been picked apart by someone with above average boxing skills like Holmes or Ali.

Again, please take this with a grain of salt. I'm just gonna' be a fly on the wall from now on in this thread.

Just imagine it, "This guy is supposed to be great? The only 10 seconds we have of him is a past prime Mosley (Who knows, by then, Mosley might have been forgotten like many of his calibur and better are today) he looked terrible and susceptible to right hands" That's why to be honest we shouldn't judge off so little. It's unfair, really.

As for the rest of your post, I would have to say that in my personal opinion I strongly disagree.

But, I would suggest that the History Section would be a lot more fitting for that discussion. You will get better responses and less poor ones.

Plus, it's been pretty slow in there recently and we need more discussion
