Most likely HBO not wanting to front more money for a card that will bring in no viewers (even though Dzinziruk was their choice
). And there's also:
SAMPSON LEWKOWICZ: "COTTO WILL FIGHT SERGIO IN SEPTEMBER"
"I have a verbal agreement from Bob Arum that Cotto will fight Sergio in September," stated Sampson Lewkowicz, world-renowned adviser of Sergio Martinez, as he gave FightHype's own Mike Juhas an update on the future plans of the middleweight champion. According to Lewkowicz, both he and Arum came to a verbal agreement that a bout between Martinez and WBA jr. middleweight champion Miguel Cotto would be much more profitable if it takes place during the latter part of 2011, after both fighters have had another opportunity to showcase their talents again.

The bolded bit implies that they were hoping Martinez would fight again before that. And Sturm would be a far more meaningful opponent at this time than Cotto, who is a small Jr Middleweight. Most likely HBO not wanting to front more money for a card that will bring in no viewers (even though Dzinziruk was their choice

If HBO won't pay to show him before September, DiBella should do a PPV like Arum does. And it would make very good money if it were in Germany (it could be held with officials from neutral countries); and by beating the clear #2 Middleweight in his own backyard, Martinez would further enhance his P4P credentials, which beating Cotto won't do. And it's about time the World Middleweight Champion defended against a genuine Middleweight.Last edited by Dave Rado; 04-06-2011, 02:19 PM.Comment

The article is from late last year, the dual head to head fights in March were the showcase. Cotto just has to get one more in-house money fight out of the way and he's clear to take on Sergio as planned. If he happens to lose again, Margarito is up to bat for a rematch 10 years in the making. Either way it works out.Comment

But without Oscar De La Hoya they would not be superstars PERIOD. They went from 300,000 before Oscar to 2.3 Million/1.5 Million after Oscar. Now that's a big difference. Why do you think that Floyd was chasing Oscar and Roach said he would not get paid if Manny lost? Manny and Floyd are where Oscar was before so why shouldn't Sergio ask for a shot when both fought and won titles at 154? You guys can't tell me nothing. Martinez is not in the wrong for wanting to fight the best champions who fought in a division where he was an active champion. What he's trying to point out is that Manny and Floyd were bigger draws back then than Sergio is right now. They both had PPV fights before even fighting Oscar and were considered paydays for DLH. Martinez, on the other hand, is one or two fights away from making his first PPV at the age of 36 or 37 years old.
Btw I'm not hating on Martinez, but I'm pointing out the obvious.Comment

EXACTLY. Dudes is hating on Martinez because he wants to fight the best and make the most money doing it. Sergio already put in work and impressively at that. Now all of a sudden he is not PPV worthy to fight the best? What happen to the sport of boxing? What happened to the fans of boxing? Everytime I visit these boxing sites all I read is b!tchin. what happened to the hardcore, real deal boxing fans who didn't cry like b!tches when a fighter called out or wanted to fight another fight who was the best? There is NO uses for EXCUSES.Comment

Sergio Martinez would put Antonio Margartio's head to bed at this point in their careers and he almost murdered Paul Williams in the ring with one punch. I think boxing nowadays is full of drama queens. Back in the day. Ray Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Trinidad, even Mosley would have lined up to fight Martinez if he was putting it down like that back then just to be considered the best. Now all we get is excuses on why they shouldn't and that he is not a PPV draw. Boxing is turning into a beauty pageant. Nobody wants to get into a real fight.Comment
