Cotto's resume definitely looks better than Floyd's, but legacy isn't defined purely by who you fight. Floyd's achievements in the sport are better and he has certainly proven himself to be the better, more skilled fighter.

What achievements are greater than the achievement of beating great fighters?

Being a 5 weight world champion means little if he didn't beat the best fighters along with it.

Selling 2m PPV's against De La Hoya looks nice on the CV but doesn't add to a fighters legacy.

And Floyd has shown himself to be the more skilled fighter against lesser opposition. How do his skills stack up against a prime Cotto, Margarito, Mosley, or Pacquiao?

Cotto will absolutely have a better resume than Mayweather unless Mayweather fights and beats Pacquiao. Mayweather is on the same level as Calzaghe, maybe a little lower.

You mention the like of Maussa and Quintana. But you don't mention a guy like Hernandez (??) or the like of Jesus Chavez (undefeated in 6 years at the time, future title-holder), who are both better fighters (especially Hernandez) than relative junk like Foreman (carefully guided to a crap-strap and was never actually very good at world level).

Yours is not a thorough breakdown of the merits of each man's record, and especially not of Floyd's.

Plus, a lot of the 'best wins' you have noted for Floyd >>> Cotto's 'best wins'.

                  • Stopping Chicanito in your first title fight >>> stopping Bailey

                  • Jesus Chavez >>> stopping Maussa

                  • Stopping undefeated Corrales >>> stopping undefeated Quintana

                  • Two wins over Castillo, who was on an excellent lightweight run >>> stopping Torres

                  • DLH >>> Foreman; noting the split-decision as if its credible shows you up -- I could show myself up by pointing to Foreman's crippled knee as if Cotto wouldn't have wrecked him just the same, but I won't -- and the judging, of course, was skewed for De La Hoya, just like all the terms of the fight were, but he still couldn't get their nod, which should tell you something about how clearly Floyd won that boxing match

                  • Stopping a very live, vicious Hatton quite arguably >>> scraping by an undynamic choker in Clottey

                  • Better performance against Mosley; you can argue the age issue (just don't forget that Floyd fought a younger Judah), but I could argue back that Floyd fought a Mosley who was rejuvenated from the flagging version Cotto met -- ultimately, Floyd's performance was much more impressive

                  I like Cotto, too, but,

Cotto will not leave a greater Legacy. Cotto doesn't have the stronger ledger. And many objective, knowledgeable "true boxing fans" (and historians) will agree with me on that.

                    cotto's been in better fights
arguably the better resume. the dude lined up top tier fighters and slugged it out every time.

                    floyd's a much better fighter.

miguel was never the same after the margarito fight
he had also taken a good deal of punishment in his victories prior to margarito. floyd's rarely touched.
i dont think we ever saw him at the height of his potential

If anyone thinks Cotto will have a better legacy, they are insane. I dont care who he's fought. He also beat up on guys was smaller then him for a large chunk of his career and when he moved up he got destroyed by Margarito & Pac. People wont forget that. He's also likely to get destoryed again in a fight with Sergio or a rematch with Pac, and maybe even a rematch Margarito.

Cotto was never even considered top 3 P4P let alone the top guy in the sport like Floyd has. The only people who will think this is guys who hate Floyd to the core for whatever reason but there is no way you can justify it. The bottom line is that there isnt one single boxing guy who thinks that Cotto is better then Floyd in any way at all and thats how they will be remembered head to head.

Cotto didnt fight alot of much bigger men like Floyd and he didnt win titles in 5 divisions like Floyd. He was chinny his whole career and people think he looked like crap against Mayorga. If you think that guy will be remembered better then you are totally biased against Floyd. The only guy who has a chance to have a better legact then Floyd as of now is Pac, case closed
