not true, pwill was supposedly campaigning at 147 before the opportunity to fight sergio, when manny was looking for his next opponent. so yes it does have relevance when discussing the manny-shane fight.

Williams hasn't fought at 147 since 2008. So not sure why you bring him up. Again, any 154 guy who isn't active at 147 is irrelevant to the discussion of 147 rankings.

fighting a top 5 contender in your weight class is fine, but there's no blanket answer for every situation. this is one of those times when manny could have done a lot more by looking outside of 147 for the fight if he wasn't gonna fight floyd, pwill, or berto (who are seen as really the only threats for him at 147)

He tried to fight floyd. Floyd wasn't available so the options were JMM, Mosley and Berto. As much as we might not like it we have to remember this sport is about making money so that's the main reason why berto's name was X'd out.

at the time paul had his name in the hat for floyd or pac at 147- that's why I bring him up. that's not some secret news, its the reason why his fight with sergio was at a catchweight

Honestly, they just went conservative by choosing an American opponent for CBS-Showtime deal, and really Mosley is best choice when looking at all your options.

It's been more than 20 years since boxing has gotten a whiff of network television. Although we're not getting actual fight to watch, we will see primetime reality shows on TV and promotional ads building up fight which is positive. I don't know how anybody cannot support that, but there's no guarentees afterwards. Really they are highlighting Pacquiao. It's an exhibition of sorts to get mainstream feet wet on Pacquiao who's a great ambassador for boxing and a good point man to get this exposure. If successful, and they can get decent ratings, uh....hopefully actual fights on actual network TV will come later. Let capitalism work.

Mosley is American who speaks English. Marquez might be better fight, but really it's a tough sell on Marquez. You cannot put two non-English speaking fighters on a primetime reality show on American TV. Berto? Please. Pacquiao may be big, but he's not that big. Mosely does have a better track record on PPV as a B side than Berto or Marquez, and is also clean cut. On paper, it's a decent style match-up with no runners.

This is first time out for Top Rank and boxing. They got a real big opportunity here to bring exposure again. Looking at that, Mosley was best choice.

I agree that it could have been a lot better if they fought in 09.

However, I disagree with you on this being a b.s. fight, because Mosley is a highly ranked fighter at WW (Top 3 IMO).

The more I think about it, the more I believe it'll actually be a more competitive fight than I had initially assumed. Just stylistically, Mosley can give anybody trouble. I just don't see how Mosley is just going to turn into the zombie, some of you are predicting he becomes.
