To my mind this was a pure showcase fight, not many steps up from the Manfredo bout. Roy can still look good against C and B grade fighters, but at the highest level the guy is completely and utterly done, and has been for a long, long time.

As far as I was concerned, all Slapsie had to do was turn up. The only surprise for me was that he was nearly KO'd in the first. I didn't expect it to be remotely competitive, and for most of the rounds it wasn't. Roy is done, done, done.
Look at this guy, giving a fully accurate account of what happened.. Sure you don't want to put more of a silver lining on it? This must be why they banished you to China and delivering take out.. Even the 24/7 for this was kind of boring.. Enzo playing guitar on the street and Roy's team smoking deer meat were the highlights. Oh and when the Calzaghe camp couldn't find the gum shield, ha ha. Totally made that series.

Actually, this reminds me... about half the people I bet for the fight (an INCREDIBLY easy pick, no?) welshed (no pun intended) on the deal.

Some bad sports there. It's only virtual points, but a bet's a bet...

          Entirely meaningless win.

You nailed it...it annoys me that so many people picked roy before the fight and said he can still beat joe, and then all you got was tumble weed after the fight. None of these people have the humility to just come out and say "damn Joe is a great fighter", and "damn roy was shot, what was I thinking?". It was a mismatch firstly because roy was past it, but also because Joe is just very good. An ordinary fighter would not be able to humiliate Jones in that fashion thats why I voted for nothing special, it is a satisfactory win, it is what a fighter of calzaghe's calibre should do.

Like it has already been said that was the money fight for him, when I think about the Dawson fight I just don't think calzaghe had the hunger to train for a guy like that...I think if Carl Froch was where he is now...then calzaghe would have taken it in Wales Millenium stadium because that is a huge fight in the UK. But that magnitude of fight just didn't exist after Jones, apart from hopkins rematch but it would have been another equally boring fight. I just don't think the great match up fans would be looking for was there...maybe kelly pavlik, but that would have got discredited in time, you can never make everyone happy.

I agree Sunny, Slapsie is underrated on here, no doubt. Sure, he has his flaws, etc., and his resume isn't the equal of his abilities, but he was an elite in the times he lived in.

I thought his win over Bore Hard was questionable, but whether he won or he didn't, there's been no one that's got in a ring with Hopkins and pretended to sodomise him. That should count for something. What, I don't know...

As for Moby, he should have taken that fight. People on here were talking about him "ducking" Moby and how Moby was the "new Tyson", which was simply ****ing hilarious. That would have been a slap up treat, a la Jeff "LOL" Lacy, though of course you can find very few posters who'll admit to their appreciation of Lacy these days. Apparently EVERYONE knew that Lacy wasn't all that these days.

What's funny about that kind of stuff is that Moby has one of the most bolt-upright European styles of boxing I've seen.

Calzaghe's wins over Jones and Hopkins are equivalent to Lennox's wins over Tyson and Holyfield.

What weight was Calzaghe going to fight Pavlik at? Look, you can't blame Moby for beating Lockett so bad Calzaghe had second thoughts.. Actually I think this is around the time when Cal was trying to work the RJJ fight.. If Calzaghe came in at a weight where he wasn't drained.. He was going to possibly stop Kelly.

Not a bad comparison really. Although Calzaghe's win over Hopkins > Lennox's win over Holyfield.
