both started and won their first title at 112. but the fact that montiel was able to bring his game to 118 and win a title give him the edge. vic tried his luck to win a title at 118 twice but failed.
In second fight at 118. Vic won the 118 IBO belt against weak opposition in Eric Barcelona. He just has not been successful against best bantamweights.

I do agree that Montiel's record at 118 is much better Vic's record at 118.

Also, you forgot to include Z Gorres for Montiel.
Their fights with Z Gorres were both controversial. Z vs. Darch ended up in a draw that a lot of fans thought Vic should have won, while Montiel vs. Z was won by Montiel in where a lot of fans thought Z should have won.

Eh....Hasegawa is a naturally bigger guy.

But, at the time Vic beat Mijares. Mijares was considered just as good if not better than what Hasegawa was considered when Montiel beat Hasegawa.

Is hard to say which win was better TBH. They about equal...

Both Castillo and Arce were very faded by the time Montiel and Vic beat them.

Well of course they thought Gorres should have won. It was close fight that took place in Gorres's hometown.

            Gallito?

no way he was already past his best when he faced Montiel and was dealing with the build up of scar tissue which led him to having plastic surgery after the Nashiro fight in order to keep the cuts from happening. He had three soft fights and clearly wasn't ready for Montiel when they fought

Gallito was the first fighter I really followed when I started working media so I know a little bit about his career

His wins over Mijares and Arce are arguably just as good/if not better than Montiel's wins over Hasgawa and Castillo. However Montiel battered Hasegawa in Japan, which deserves a lot of praise.

I'm undecided, that's why I made this poll - to see what BoxingScene thinks.
I see it as him hitting a lucky punch more than anything. HE, not Hase, was getting owned prior to the punch.

actually gorres got the raw end of the decision so the hometown did not give him any advantage. he got points deducted for what? a wet spot on his corner and for holding when he got wobbled by montiel the same thing that floyd did against shane. the ref clearly favored montiel in that fight. if not for those deductions gorres was the clear winner.

I agree that Montiel was losing prior to the stoppage. But the manner of victory was brutal. It was a good punch and finish by Montiel, that's why I said "battered".
