Originally posted by JUYJUYBenn and Watson were the top two British Middle prospects in the late 80's, their fight gained loads of hype and attention.
Chris Eubank came along and stopped Benn and Watson at their peaks, Eubank also defeated 35-0 Graciano Rocchigiani IN GERMANY (the racist chanting just spurred him on) and is the most recognisable British post-war boxer outside of the ring. Eubank was undefeated in his first 43 fights, with 19 world championship wins at both middleweight and super-middleweight, and never even having been knocked down (he slipped against Benn and Watson, they were slips not knockdowns). And he was ofcourse the game's great showman. That is ELITE in every way, every shape and every form. ELITE.
Not since Henry Cooper's suspect brows gushed blood during his bouts with Cassius Clay has a picture of boxing injury been so widely projected as Eubank's eye being completely closed in the Thompson fights.

prime eubank would have played with lacy . he had skills close to toney's and the size and strenght to nullify lacy straight ahead pressure .
on the other hand , lacy would have destroyed benn , lacy has more strenght size and skills than benn .Comment

Eubank could of been fighter of the decade .. he had cat-like speed and reflex, but his best asset was his concentration, and he was a puncher
Unfortunately that tragedy in September 1991 ruined him .. Chris never was the same again .. before that night, Chris was a puncher .. before that night, Chris had cat-like instincts when he had a man hurt .. after that night, Chris was no longer a puncher .. after that night, Chris had lost his finishing instinct, and he just didn't seem to have as much concentration as before ..
Sure, he was an excellent fighter still but I did not prefer the cautious Eubank just like I did not prefer the cautious RJjnr post-Feb95 .. and I think Chris stayed at super middle too long because he was always really struggling to make the weight and it was getting more and more of a struggle over time .. Chris would drag every ounce of liquid out of his body to make weight ( he walked around at 190 between fights ! ) .. he should of moved up to 175 .. if you watch Chris' fantastic performances against Rocchigiani and Wharton in 94 and then watch Chris in his second fight with Collins in Sept95 when he retired and in his fight with Calzaghe in Oct97 when he came out of retirement ( apart from a couple of exhibitions at 175 in the middle east ) and it's blatantly clear to all that Chris was a complete shadow of his former self by the time he drained his weight down yet again and dragged himself to the ring against Collins the second time and for Calzaghe with a weeks notice .. the Chris who fought so well against Rocchigiani and Wharton would clearly win every round against the Chris who fought Collins the second time and Calzaghe .. and that is clearly a result of too many yrs struggling to make the 12stone limit combined with the fact that all of his fights were going the full 12 rounds due to losing his finishing instinct post-Watson - so Eubanks body was a complete wreck by the time he fought Collins the second time ( over 18 mnths after Rocchigiani and almost a yr after Wharton ) .. I remember Eubank's trainer ( the black guy from New York ) saying that Chris had to win those two fights between the Collins fights as early as possible because he couldnt last long ( he rushed in and won both those fights in the first round ) and the guy also said that he knew Chris didnt stand a chance against Collins the second time if it went any longer than six rounds due to Eubanks body being a wreck .. watch the first Collins fight and Eubank looks much better, he picks up the early rounds casually just as usual and is looking good and then knocks down Collins with a chopping right hand at the start of round 10 which almost knocks Collins head off and has Collins' head hanging through the ropes ( that was six months and a few more fights earlier than the second Collins fight, six more months of struggle with weight ) .. he didnt finish Collins in the first fight because he had terrible images of Watson flashing through his head and didnt do anything for the rest of the fight so Collins picked up the last two rounds and got a gift decision because Eubank had slipped a few times earlier in the fight and the referee had counted them as knockdowns, it was such a huge upset but Eubank was just freaked out in the head ( Collins had claimed he was hypnotised into believing he wouldn't feel any punches and would need to be killed to be stopped or something and it freaked Eubank what with Eubank being fragile in the mind after Watson )
I dont know why Chris didnt accept the fight with Henry Maske, he chose to rematch Collins instead and then retire instead of fighting Maske for the IBF 175 belt .. he had already been to Germany and defeated an undefeated 6'3" German southpaw and at 175 Eubank would be at a more comfortable weight .. and if he beat Maske ( which he would of done at 175 ) he was guaranteed a multimillion fight with RJjnr ..Last edited by theclawoftheTiger; 09-01-2005, 02:10 AM.Comment
