The more you try to make your point, the more contrived it sounds. Briggs wasn't some guys in his 40's who hadn't fought in years. He wasn't a fat lightheavy pretending to be a heavyweight. And he wasn't the worst challenger for the title either. The weakling starting out in the gym analogy is absolutely ridiculous.

Could Vitali have given a signal? Sure. Also could be that his mentality to it is very old-school gentleman's sportsmanship - you respect your opponent by fighting him and leave officials to do their job.

It's possible that ward and the ref both noticed something we didnt


if you're close enough (or if the building is just quiet) sometimes you can hear grunts or cries from guys who are outmatched (often from shots to the body)
maybe the ref heard or saw weakness that we couldnt see



all this being said ward is a lame finisher
