if you're close enough (or if the building is just quiet) sometimes you can hear grunts or cries from guys who are outmatched (often from shots to the body)
maybe the ref heard or saw weakness that we couldnt see



all this being said ward is a lame finisher
good finisher's dont need the referee

And he wasn't the worst challenger for the title either. The weakling starting out in the gym analogy is absolutely ridiculous.
