Just re watched Cotto vs Margarito

    2 questions:

Marg took a lot of clean powerful shots from Cotto and walked (and even ran at some points) through them like they were nothing, Pacquiao did the same a year later.

Cotto was previously thought to be one of the pound for pound big punchers before the Marg fight. Was Cotto's power overrated? Similarly was Marg's chin overrated? (Bearing in mind for both these questions what Mosley did to Margarito)

Also, even if Margarito was using plaster in his wraps for the Cotto fight (which I probably think he was) the problem Cotto had was dealing with the relentless pressure of Margarito. I think a rematch would have a similar outcome.

I think Cotto hits hard, but I don't consider him one of the top punchers in the sport, at least not in terms of one punch power. I do think that he puts his punches together well and is a good finisher though. I'd say that his aggressive style probably did result in people considering him a bigger puncher than he really is, but not significantly so IMO.

I don't think Marg's chin was overrated because Shane does have a lot of power. He was able to hurt Floyd (who doesn't have a bad chin) everytime he landed (twice lol) but it took several rounds of landing those kinds of shots to hurt Margarito.

Cotto is pretty heavy-handed, but not a big puncher. He busts faces up for the most part though, with even Pacquiao looking in pretty bad shape afterwards despite kicking Cotto's ass. But he's an accumulation puncher. Judah isn't the toughest or most resilent guy but he took a lot of shots and lasted until the 11th. Moreover, a lot of Cotto's best work came when he was backing up against Margarito and not putting enough into his shots. Nor did he get much of a body attack going.

Margarito's chin wasn't overrated. Margarito showed a terrific chin against Mosley too, the fact that it took 8 rounds of that many flush punches to the head from Mosley, who's no powder-puff guy, shows Margarito's amazing ability to absorb head shots. Mosley was loading up on these right hands, most guys would've been out of there sooner.

No way to tell really. If a guy is hitting you with much harder shots then obviously that's going to change things. How much the shots take out of you, how you fight, your may get more tense knowing how hard the guy hits and this leads to more fatigue, Margarito holding a mental edge if he did have loaded gloves and knew, etc..

Cotto ****ed Margarito's chin and Mosley finished the job.

Cotto is a good puncher, but if anyone thought he was one of the biggest punchers in the sport they were overrating his power. Pac only had to deal with his power for like 5 rounds though, and you can see what happened to Pac's face.

As far as Margarito's chin, Shane Mosley is a huge puncher and it took him 9 rounds of big shots to put Margarito away. It might be weak now, but at that point it wasn't.

What both the Pacquiao and Margarito fights showed is that pressure combined with a big workrate throws Cotto off, and he is susceptible to that style. If Margarito and Cotto had a rematch Cotto would still have a hell of a fight on his hands if Margarito fights the same way he did the first time around.

Cotto is heavy handed, his punches thud, but he doesn't have Mosley's type of power!!I believe Mosley hits much harder than Pacman as well,I don't think Pacman's punches are gonna have the same effect on Margarito as Mosley's did!!

Cotto's punches always look harder than they are because he keeps them short and crisp and really turns them over.

The thing about the Margarito and Pac fights is that both men had Cotto moving backwards all night. As a result Cotto was not setting his feet and getting his legs into shots like he does against guys who he knows he can steamroll.

Very few fighters in the history of boxing have been able to deliver devastating blows while moving backwards.

i think cottos power is decent, but not what some people made out. i dont doubt margaritos chin tho, its easily the best in boxing. i consider mosley the hardest hitting welterweight and even he needed several massive right hands to drop margarito, who still wouldnt be actually knocked out and he was still smiling when he went down!

Mosley without question hits much harder than Pac does. I think Pac will stop Margarito, but not like Mosley did, it will be like the DLH fight where Pac will blister him with punches to the point the fight is stopped.
