    Yeah, we're really racist.
Mate, in my town there was a loyalist march last week. about 50-60 broke off from it and attacked an Irish pub and a flag shop in Glasgow.

The police had to lock everybody into the pub, arrested no-one and allowed loyalists to carry on their way.

That sort of incident happens every summer durig marching season across Scotland and Northern Ireland and is rarely reported but its still a hallmark of a racist society that uses violence to intimidate immigrants that have lived in a town for centuries.

That attitude has to be changed if British society wants to fight racism and xenophobia. You seem to want to ignore the fact that the problem is growing.

By comparison only 300,000 people watched the FA cup highlights and football is arguably the UK's top sport.
I bet 90% of those 600,000 which is 1% of the UK population were Asian, I hate to say it but America is light years ahead of the UK in every single department, Economy, Race-Relations, Military, Social, Education, There is no country that can match the US.

The British once said "The sun never sets on the British Empire", Today I say "The sun never rises on the British isles". The British just simply can never accept Khan because of his race/religion.

Its a sobering thought. I only hope and pray the UK can be more like the US.

So my question to the British is if Amir Khan was white would you like him more?

I hate to say it but the UK seems like its not at the same level as the US when it comes to race relations and tolerance, Heck just look at the US president.

American fans are pure boxing fans. They dont bring prejudice into the boxing arena. For instance Manny is oriental yet he gets great support in america. That would never ever happen in britain. Only place manny would get support in the UK is in china town or Chinese restaurant.

That being said I know that Britian is a very divided country, There is no such thing as "British", You are either English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, or a derogatory term for anything else. Perhaps the problem the UK faces is that they have been unable to define a national identity. For instance in the US there are Italian-Americans, ***ish-Americans, Arab-Americans, African-Americans, Latino-Americans....But are all still Americans.
I haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but I had to reply to your opening post. Basically, you have no idea what you're talking about.

For a start, if you're going to type in the language that we, yes, us Brits invented could you have at least the common courtesy to spell correctly; colour has a u in it - check the Oxford English dictionary.

To say that 'the British don't like the kid because of his color*' is just pure bull****. Amir is a very popular figure here; his fights sell out and hundreds of thousands follow his fights on TV. He is well liked and the majority of people see him as a role model for young men in the ****** community. Of course, a few racist twats will not get over his skin colour or background, but they are very much the minority. Most people who aren't big fans of his, like myself, find him an arrogant knob who does far too much talking for his own good.

To say that my country is not tolerant is quite frankly insulting. We are unquestionably one of the most tolerant countries in the world who has a richly diverse multicultural society. Again, you have no idea what you are talking about.

I am not sure whether this is a bait thread or not and quite frankly I don't care. Getting a lecture of an American about race relations and tolerance is like getting a leaflet from Hitler about the ***s needing to be treated better.

          That's not the question.

Would he be morepopualr if he was white?

I think yes, of course because he would relate to more people.

Froch is old and never got on TV other than ITV4 once.

De gale was in with a bunch of other medalists while Khan was the only entry at 17.

Those guys were on Sentanta or whatever.

I agree, I think its more to do with him being well off and well connnected from the start and we like boxers who are working class heroes.

                    He is no Ricky Hatton.

The problem I have is when folk say British society isn't racist when it quite clearly is. Its not as bad as many claim it is or want it to be; but its not good and there are serious problems about race in the UK.

It has nothing to do with his race or colour. A lot of people in Britain dislike him for a lot of reasons ie because he boasts when he ain't really fought anyone yet. He is a protected fighter who never even fought for the British or European titles. He has had money thrown at him and other boxers like John Murray have to do things the hard way.
