        Ali was hardly patriotic.

If they didn't agree with his religious views and actions and he didn't agree with theirs, why would he go and defend them by hurting someone else?

It's not about patriotism. It's about courage. Ali had a point. He was right to question the justness of the war. But at the same time, he revealed he was a *****. Plain and simple he was scared to go, so he quickly thought up the best way to do it, convert to islam. How convenient. He was right and he was a *****. They are not mutually exclusive.

No way...Ali stood up for MILLIONS OF AMERICANS with his stand and the fact that they were black Americans shouldnt make a difference should it? Millions of Americans were empowered by this one man and his actions....it is INSANE for ANYONE to think Ali should have went to a war defending this country when the fact is that black Americans in his region of the country were treated as bad as dogs...think about it right now, today, in 2009...reverse the roles...think about it...what would YOU do if they drafted you to go to Iraq to defend a country that didn't tell the politicians, shop keepers, lawmen, etc etc of the southern states that they couldnt treat WHITE PEOPLE the way they do...in Alabama and Kentucky WHITE people have to drink out of their own water fountains and will be beaten if they drink from one that is clearly marked "Black ONLY!!"....tell me,would YOU go and defend a country that allows this to happen to you??? (AND if so, would you REALLY feel safe with a black panther party officer directing you into the caves of Afghanistan, would you trust him to make the best decisions for you and your well being???? You know????

Look, I respect the military to the FULLEST...I have kids I train who are there NOW...defending and fighting in Iraq....but for a southern born black man in the 1960's to be called UNPATRIOTIC because he didnt feel his country loved him, well, I DONT BLAME HIM ONE BIT.

Look up Emmit Till sometime...tell me if you think HE should have gone if he were called to do so
            ...

PRESIDENT? WHAT WAS HE SCARED OF? Being sent around to do boxing exhibitions for the troops? I mean, COME ON NOW, you don't REALLY think Ali was going to be out in the bush shooting at Viet Cong do you???? Ali didnt have to fear being shot, blown up, etc....no way in this world does he go to the war...he would have been used as a puppet for morale, etc...they even had it set up for him to do that....scared? The guy would have been eating steak and sleeping in a nice bed in proper quarters, man...

So what are you saying here? Are you saying Ali converted to Islam in 1964 to avoid being drafted in 1967? Hmmm, that must have taken some incredible foresight.

He is a hero, sure he is... he represented and stood up for MANY nameless and faceless Americans...many point out that many other blacks did go to Vietnam but they fail to also point out that they had NO CHOICE, they would have been in jail ASAP...Ali was a different story, though, and many simply hated that about him, they would have rather had people just do as they were told regardless of the consequences. You tell me I can't eat in a restaurant, can't date a white girl, I can't run for office, can't drink out of THAT water fountain on a 100 degree day...but u want me to go defend YOU in another country against people I don't even know? ARE YOU JOKING OR WHAT?????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????

And you'd think after all this time that he could have stopped being a ****** if he wasn't sincere.
