Hell yeah he was unpatriotic. He was tired of the whole bull**** that white America was putting him through as a vocal black man growing up in the 50s and 60s. People went to see him lose, they made "Great White Hopes" out of fighters much blacker than he was. He joined the Nation of Islam because he recognized himself more as a black man than as an American.

At the time it was thought so. But looking back in hindsight he did the right thing for himself and by the laws of the United States, which is why the supreme court exonerated him. It took a lot of courage and integrity to do what Ali did in my opinion.
