He simply wanted bigger stars. He wants to have big fights and get the most money. He's a business man before he's a fighter. It's not a flaw, for the fans it might be, it's simply the way some think. I don't blame him for his own personal priorities.

He wanted all the fighters in the division to beat eachother up, but that's wha all fighters technically bank on. He wanted them to be bigger stars. That's why Cotto would have been the guy he preferred out of Manny and Cotto, because it's an easier fight, but it's also a big fight if he won. And a fight he can get the A-side of far more than he could with Manny. But, I don't think he feels he can't beat Manny.

For better or worse, he honestly thinks he can beat ANYONE. It's not a a scam. He believes he's that great.

He wants only big stars to prove it again. So, he retired to let them all become it or get forgetten. Some did it, Manny. Some are forgotten, Margarito. Trust, if he beats Manny clearly, in any way, it's either a rematch, or a fight with Mosley next. If Mosley loses and if Cotto comes back strong, he'll fight him next.
at least some people on NSB understand logic...........

    good stuff!

Yea, i remember him sayin that sht too... Now all you young boxing fans see what the boxing game is about now because back in the days fighters faced each other and fought 3 or 4 times a year and wanted to be called the best fighter period... But look now the way things are, these guys fight 1 time a year and pick and choose who they want to fight... I say that is some bullsht... It,s all about money now and days... No hate, just sayin make the money but fight the best and no hiding...

People forget that boxing isn't just about the fights. It's a tough lifestyle that requires discipline and dedication to remain at the top. Of all the accusations you can level at PBF, ******ity is not one of them and he knows that he needs to be in top condition to remain the p4p best. You need drive, passion, a fire in your belly to get out there and run mile after mile, day after day, to keep going in the gym when you are in pain, to say no to nice looking but unhealthy food & drink, to trim your social life and spend time away from your family and friends.

I think he was lacking motivation. Hatton was a bit of a super fight, coming in unbeaten, hailed as the best light welter stepping up to take on PBF. He'd had a super fight with De La Hoya before that. How do you train just as hard when you are fighting a mexican that has been beaten 5 times? Or wait for Cotto to become a mega star instead of just a respected unbeaten fresh champion?
FYI, Cotto was a star already before Floyd retired. Cotto had KO Judah and had beaten Mosley before Floyd retired. Before Floyd fough DLH, Margarito challenged him and his excused was "it's just business". Translation, i'm a pvssy Margarito i would never fight you. Before Floyd fought DLH, Floyd was asked in an interview about Cotto, his response was, "you see, Cotto lives in Puerto Rico". Translation, i'm really scared of Cotto, i'm glad he lives in Puerto Rico.

LOL! This is a joke. Cotto was undefeated before Floyd retired and he KO Judah and beat Mosley before Floyd retired. C'mon now, Cotto is still in top 5 WW if not better.

Cotto and Mosley are Bigger Stars then Marquez, Baldimor, Judah, Mitchell
Plus Cotto and Mosley are better fighters then Hatton
And Margarito is a bigger Mexican Star then Marquez

                  De La Hoya was old.

Cotto's been a Star in the sport for 3/4 years now.

Floyd could have fought any of them and made just as much money as the Hatton fight. SO quit giving the man excuses for not Fighting the BEST WELTERWEIGHTS in the Division. He Retired because he knew he would have to fight one of them, and say defeat.

and dont tell me Baldimor/Judah is a bigger star then Mosley/Cotto/Margarito because you will get ***** SLAPPED by your own conscience.

                  dude..you make no sense...

In regards to Mayweather & Cotto

lets look at a timeline...in april of 2006 Mayweather beats Zab Judah & in November of 2006 he beats Baldomir..the last 2 undisputed WW champs

in 2006 Cotto was fighting @140 vs Gianluca Branco & Paul Malignaggi....at the END of 2006 (december) he moved up to 147lbs to fight Carlos Quintana in his 1st fight @147lbs......

(side note:....Bob Arum DID NOT want to put Cotto in with Mayweather when they were both @ 140lbs and promoted by Top Rank)

in 2007 Mayweather fought De La Hoya (May 2007) & Ricky Hatton (December 2007) the 2 biggest PPV fights that year in boxing...

in 2007 Miguel Cotto...Oktay Urkal in March 2007, Zab Judah in June 2007 & Shane Mosley in November 2007......

(ANOTHER Side note:....Mayweather said he was retiring after the Hatton fight...he said this before the Mosley-Cotto fight even Happened)...

so how did Mayweather duck Cotto when he was already going to retire after the Hatton fight?

In regards to Mayweather & Mosley

In 2006 Mosley was fightin @154lbs vs Vargas twice and after the 2nd Vargas fight in July of 2006 he said this to Larry merchant about fighting mayweather......vacation..toothache..blah blah blah

in 2007 Mosley DROPPED TO 147lbs to fight Collazo (who 2 fights prior to that got beat by Ricky Hatton) ..then at the end of 2007 he fought Cotto a month b4 Mayweather stated he was going to retire and take 2 years off

                  this is you>>

Not hatin' but I feel he quit for a couple reasons. I think he really didn't wanna fight Cotto or Margarito. He said when he retired that he had nothing else to prove and that he wanted to quit on top. He clearly had alot to prove before he retired but he thought his career would leave a legacy that would rival the greats. By retiring on top, he felt that no one could dispute his greatness and his "0" remains intact. He didn't wanna risk damaging that legacy. He could just sit back and watch everyone else destroy each other. He says that he doesn't care about legacy but the truth is that's the thing he cares most about. That's why he's always talking about how great he is. I don't think he was counting on Pac surpassing him in his absence. It was as if the world forgot about him within a matter of months. Sorry, but boxing won't die just because you left.

People on here say that there were no more big money fights left? That's ridiculous because there was plenty of money with a Cotto and a Margarito fight. Both come with a big Latin following. Shane is a also a big name, but to Floyd, that would mean risking a loss on his record.

I'm sorry but you don't "retire" to let your hands heal. It's not retiring if you intend to come back. I honestly don't think he was intending to come back. He's prided himself in getting in and out of the game without getting seriously hurt. I think the rise of Pac and his money problems with the IRS prompted his comeback. He thought by easily beating the guy that pretty much beat Pac, people would forget about Pac and he would be on top again.
