Manny Pacquiao: true champion? or just a belt winner?

He didn't spend any time defending his 135 title, but looking back, is there any doubt that he wouldn't have beaten casamayor or juan diaz? I don't think anyone can argue against the fact that it's a lot harder to move up and win a title in a new higher weight division than it is to defend it over and over in the same division. Who in the lower divisions has any chance of beating him? That's why only special fighters are able to do it at all..i.e. mayweather, marquez, etc...Pacquiao is a great champion, maybe not at any specific weight, thus making the pound for pound distinction accurate.

You have to actually fight the guys and beat them to get the credit. You just cant claim and automatically say he beats such and such, that doesnt work like that!!!

This just another lame attempt to discredit somebody. Manny moved up to face fighters that were bigger risks. Manny can't please everyone and will always be discredited. The fact that he is fighting way above his weight proves how special he is. They want him to fight in his weight class to prove he is deserves his accolades? What kinda twisted thinking is that. Only in the mind of a jealous hater.

Listen buddy, there's no doubt that Manny has done amazing things, I've already said that. All I'm saying is we should look at the term "6/7 division champion" with a little more perspective.

Wow...i think my posts are being misinterpreted. I have all the respect in the world for Pac. What he has done is unprecedented, and for the record. I'm no hater. Although I really do not like Floyd.

I'm not Floyd stan, I'm no stan. In fact if you click the link in my sig that says Favorite fighters, you'll see Manny's name there, but not Floyd's. I like Manny, he's a great fighter.

All fair mate. Just wondering, since this is a classic Horus or King Flawless thread from what I've seen on this forum. I don't think anybody puts serious stock into Pac's belt from 135. But nobody questions the legitimacy of his status as a great champion overall, except PBF stans.

Of course they do, but can you really call yourself a true great champion if you're not defending your title?

I'm not taking anything from Pacquiao as a fighter, only the 7 division claim if he beats Cotto.

To me, I would've liked to see Manny hang around at 135 longer. Ruling that division for a year or two would be something special with the talent in there.

If you had to say what's more impressive, what would it be:

Ruling 135 - beating opponents like Marquez, Juan Diaz, Nate Campbell, Edwin Valero, and Joan Guzman.

or

Beating David Diaz, De La Hoya, and Ricky Hatton

Pacquiao is doing what I would do myself at this point in his career -- taking scalps. Big names. It looks better on the resume later on down the line than guys like Guzman, Campbell (please... ), etc.

I have no doubt he would obliterate all the names at 135 that you mentioned apart from Marquez who, at least when they are at a similar (lower) weight, would always give him a fairly even fight. At 140+, I think Manny knocks Marquez out.

Also, if he hadn't been offered the Oscar fight, who knows, maybe he would have stayed at 135 for a while, but as far as I know he was already planning on going to 140 and fighting Hatton anyway. He mentioned it around the time he was fighting Diaz.

Diaz was just a stop-off at a service station before proceeding on to his real destination, which was 140+. So, no. I never expected him to stay at 135 anyway.

Pacquiao is more than your average title holder. He is a multi-million dollar Prize Fighter.

When he beat David Diaz at 135, he could have stayed to defend it. But when Oscar put him on notice for a multi-million dollar fight, Pac took it.

As any fighter would. I mean, it's Oscar!

Then he was tagged to fight Hatton. Well...okay, another million dollar fight. Once he got the belt, he was willing to stay....until Arum set him up with Cotto.

This is no longer your usual champ and title holder.

All of this is true, and completely understandable. But it also doesn't address my main point which is the way the term "6/7 division champion" is thrown around without any perspective as to how that was accomplished.

As I've said before, there's no doubt Manny has been a great champion, but not in all these divisions.
