the heavyweight era as I remember it at the time was Fury, Joshua, Wilder, Ortiz.

wilder fought Ortiz twice when he didn’t have to. First fight was super tough for him and he chose to run it back.

he fought Fury, was lucky to get a draw, and ran that back too when many fighters would have taken the draw and skipped town.

He lost to Fury, truthfully all 3x. That’s boxing. You win and you lose. He gave fury a lot of hell in that trilogy, dropping him in multiple fights. Wilder was not a duck by any means. He took tough fights when he had a way out of them, and he got my respect for that.
The offer to AJ has been proven to be bs.

Enlighten us all on those tough fights he took? Ref saved him in the 1st fight vs 50yo Ortiz, fight. He HAD to save face. He HAD to rematch Fury after getting a gift draw.

What tough fights during his title run did he take besides those 2? Spizlka, Molina, Brezeale? Lol

Ortiz. Ortiz 2. Fury. Fury 2. Fury 3.

he didn’t have to take any of these. He took Ortiz 1 and it was great and he got beaten up a bit before coming back for a KO. Fury he got super lucky to escape w a draw. Cowards move on and don’t do rematches. Haney never rematched Loma. Kambosos never rematched Teofimo. People take their draws and run. Deontay made it a point to double back. TOUGH FIGHTS.

If he can’t pull the trigger than he should stay retired. Blowing this guy out does nothing but get him back under the lights. I expect a quick KO. If things go as expected he should look into a sturdy journeyman with some boxing skill like that Guido guy. A winnable fight against a guy who is big with some skill. I just don’t see it going well when he steps up. He’s been sleeping under silk sheets for too long…

              Correct.

The one that sticks out for me, though, is Povetkin.

Why on earth was he taking that fight? When you look at the other choices he made it stands as a strange decision.

Or did they somehow know it wouldn't go ahead?

I literally think Wilder thought he could beat Povetkin. I think he believed his hype. He believed over 12 rounds he would land his one money shot to bail him out. I don’t think he was ducking guys. The Fury Fights, Ortiz, Povetkin, I think he thought he could knock out Joshua. Truthfully I always rooted against him his whole career. Couldn’t stand him. Was embarrassed by his wild excuses after Fury 2. During Fury 3 I thought he showed a ton of heart and actually found myself rooting for him suddenly in that fight. Then afterwards, he did that bull**** about not wanting to shake hands with Fury or whatever in the ring and I was reminded of why I never liked him. But I think he really believed his right hand would bail him out versus any opponent.

Wilder avoided fighting Klitschko for the undisputed crown as verified by his own manager. After the IBF, WBO and WBA titles were divided, he made no attempt to unify with any of the guys who held them, leaving that job to AJ.

After AJ unified those 3 titles, Wilder turned down a career high offer from Hearn to fight AJ for all the belts, then turned down a $100milion offer to fight AJ from DAZN. He responded with a ridiculous bogus "offer" to AJ via social media, refusing to discuss the terms of the offer unless AJ accepted it first. WTF!!!?

Ortiz was never a legit top HW. He swerved his mandatory shot at AJ, then turned down a career high voluntary defence offer from AJ.

He only "lost his confidence" because he finally started fighting actual top 5 level opponents who ****ed him up repeatedly.

It was a mandatory defence, so he had no option in that respect.

What puzzled me was why the WBC ordered him to fight Povetkin in the first place, when they were clearly in Haymon/PBC's pocket at that time. Maybe, for legal reasons, they were compelled to?
