Comments Thread For: How much could the Saudi Arabia mirage eventually cost boxing?

In the short term it just means we are getting big fights more often than usual, and deeper cards than usual.
In the long term its not gonna cost boxing, the Saudi bubble will burst at some point and then things will just go back to the way they were. People arent gonna stop punching each other in the face in a ring for money, and there will always be an audience for it. Its not like American (UK etc etc) boxing has completely died while this Saudi stuff is happening either.
Dont get me wrong, I find the whole sportwashing stuff pretty ridiculous and would rather a lot of these fights were being held in a better country, but lets not get all apocalyptic about it. Just enjoy the upsides of the Saudis throwing money down the drain for now.

You can tell this is a hit piece because they included literally every possible anti-Saudi argument that anybody could come up with, which is why the article is so long. Halfway through they start discussing what a perfect boxing league would be like, and then criticising the Saudis for not living up to that.
There are valid criticisms of the Saudi involvement but overall it has been more good than bad so far.dannnnn

yeah lets just keep the model citizens we have right now, arum, hoya, hearn, haymon (Don King lol) wbc etc, boxing has had the mob, brown envelopes, scandals, fixing, cheating, judging, refs on the take, & the rest, the sport would need a total clean out and restructure, might as well add the over paying saudis into the mix, tow the line & turki will pay u it seems is the way to go

No ine liked al haymon because he would not work with other promoters. Al Sheikh will make any fight, he does not care about who the promoter is. I think it's unsustainable though because boxing is not worth it. They are losing money and you can promote tourism in other ways. Boxing is a dead sport

PBC on their best day couldn't throw the money at fighters that the Saudis are. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but the scenarios aren't even comparable. Even PBC is kissing the ring. Are the Saudis taking over boxing? They seem to be pretty specific about which weight classes and which fighters they back. Somebody said it's giving boxing a black eye. This sport already has two black eyes. Boxing was already at a point where the top boxers refused to fight each other because they could make more money in the long run fighting stiff after stiff. Is that what boxing fans want? I'm already at the point where I'm skipping "big" fights like Canelo vs Berlanga. If I can get 3 or 4 good cards a year from the Saudis, so be it.alexoneness
