Bit of both. Boxing - prize fighting - was already well established in Cuba before the revolution, Cuba, Havana in particular was a kinda resort Island for wealthy Americans (and a kind of de facto colony of the US) and boxing was a popular sport.

However after the revolution in 1959 the Soviets sent one of their best boxing coaches to help both train and organise the logistics for the Cuban amateur program, helping set up the intensive training schools and system of privileges that helped produce some of the greatest ammies of all time. The boxing style was distinct from the Soviet style but the training intensity and regime owed much to the Soviet system

Instead, I think they're just the latest batch of dominant Eastern European fighters to emerge after Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan etc who seem to have that HUNGER that the richer nations are missing.
