Haney's gotten away with it before because he's been way longer than his opponents. He's had at least a 3 inch reach advantage for most if not all of his previous bouts. So people don't throw the counter because they know they can't reach. They have to close the gap, and that adds a lot of time to the counter. Ryan could, because he's almost the same size as Devin, and Haney had not seen that yet in his career. Boots would have a reach advantage on Haney, and more skill and power. None of the issues I mentioned go away regardless of whether his opponents are stronger and faster. Timing beats speed, and bad defensive habits and inability to adjust are fatal flaws as soon as you start fighting more even contests.
