Tournaments in pro boxing?

Seen as Matchroom have today launched this Japanese version of Prizefighter, what are your thoughts on tournaments in pro boxing?

I actually really like them. I loved Matchroom’s original Prizefighter format on Sky, some decent fighters emerged from it too, Martin Murray, Terry Flanagan, Rocky Fielding, Lee Haskins, Mike Perez etc.

I also was a massive fan of the WBSS, thought that was excellent and produced some top matchups and also didn’t drag on or become a bit of a mess like the Super Six did.

Even the Golden Contract tournament MTK put together prior to the Kinahan laundering getting exposed was really fun to watch too.

if there was a central boxing body that organised them for a class & they were made the top prize in boxing, like a mini world cup in football they would attract guys from a lower class to move up for it and maybe even down for it & duckers can just stay away as they would do anyway instead of waiting for turki to make the fights these days

Agreed about the WBSS. Not all were really the best, but they at least produced reasonably competitive matches, instead of showcases for the A-side with judges biased before the opening bell against the B-side.

Also, it's absolutely disgraceful the way the WBA is treating Barroso. At least email him a belt or something. (I know that super random and off topic).

Was a great idea in theory but the scheduling and organisation became a nightmare. Did produce some really good matchups though. Kessler-Froch was my favourite fight from the Super Six, absolute war.

Hell yeah. I had some casual friends who got into the Super 6 and still bring it up time to time. They ask why there hasn't been another one.

It seems convenient for casual fans to follow the tournament structure. I like the decentralized nature of boxing but it has drawbacks; it pretty hard to follow and know how each fighter fits in unless you're following all the time, which is nothing to say of the various weight classes. A tournament rounds it all out and makes it easy to understand and gives finality.

Bring em on. The Contender was notable too, outside of the dramatic editing of the actual fights.

5x5 was not a tournament but nothing to say it can't be one. That thing has potential imo, especially if they can do in the US and regularly. The Pots could get huge, all kinds of rivalries could be born and leaned into, that brings attention

Japan does tournaments all the time. Love it.

I’ve heard they might do a 118 tournament for undisputed now that they hold all the champs

Good on paper but not for the 168 division, those guys won't jeopardize their standings fighting each other and potentially losing, they'd rather sit around fighting low risk guys hoping Canelo gives them a rose.

The Contender was a cool idea. I even enjoyed the re-run they made what Brandon Adams won.
