Well... A lot of fighters obviously have a lot of things that can do. I would say there comes a point where a fighter has to reduce his tool bag to a fundamental orientation. Boxer puncher, puncher, pressure fighter, counter puncture, etc.

Matais applies pressure well but it's all centered around his punch. He wants to hit the other guy in such a way that the power of his punch well ultimately prevail. I would call him an excellent puncher who applies pressure at an elite level.

With Pitbull he really doesn't have an outstanding punch. He relies upon making his opponent unbalance by constantly trying to avoid his pressure. What he's really depending on is not the power of his punch, so much as catching his opponent off balance, pressuring to make his opponent make a mistake so he can counter and smother.

Let's look at an example of this. If you look at the gervantes fight, a fight I think Pitbull won by the way.. he can't take a straight punch that's been set up by somebody who can hit like gervantes or even Matisse.. instead by keeping them going back he robs them of their punching power. This is textbook what happened in the gervantes fight.

A straight puncher like Matisse really is depending on catching his opponent by applying pressure more than keeping his opponent unbalanced, to set up counters.

I agree. Making the weight one more time would have disadvantaged Haney, Shakur should have jumped on the 25% he was offered.

Thank you for the breakdown. For my own edification, if you don't mind, how do you classify Benavidez? He's not a one hitter quitter guy, and relies on volume to break guys down. Seems more like Matias by this description than Cruz? Am I understanding correctly?

Margarita junior? . That's a good question. The Monster is a pressure guy as I see it. Yes, volume, making his opponent reset constantly and make mistakes all the while breaking down the body. Did you mean to say more like cruz or matias?

I think Matias has much sharper punching than either cruz or benavidez. And whereas if you notice c r u z or b e n a v i d e z usually are working the body or using a counter punch,
m a t i a s on the other hand is usually setting up a big punch. One thing I should say I have not watched a lot of m a t i a s, so I might be making a judgment based on a few of his fights and not enough of them. So if you may notice otherwise according to the criteria then I could be wrong about the distinction.

I have mentioned before that both Haney & Shakur will be very hard to beat .But an elite pressure fighter w/ a unconventional style beats him , insert: Subriel Matias he has the best conditioning and power @140 and he is coming for your heart .

I agree. Haney tends to depend on setting up very technically. If you think about it look at what happened when Floyd fought guys who could apply pressure really well. He often had problems.

If you really want to go back look at Ray Robinson and how LaMotta managed to beat him.

Haney will have to grow quick!

I reckon Devin is going to get plenty of knockouts now he is closer to his natural weight (prob 1 or 2 divisions higher even). Interested to see if posters who **** on him come back to admit they were wrong but not holding my breath. But no doubt will come back and say he was juiced or fighter was injured etc etc.

No issues w hating a fighter - at least tell the truth. Even as a Haney supporter i can admit he lost to Loma. As another poster said - Roy Jones, Tim Bradley and many others regard Devin as top prospect in division - slightly more qualified than some on this forum.
