Comments Thread For: Devin Haney: I Should Be Fighter Of The Year; My Dad Deserves Trainer Of The Year

Benavidez was expected to win those fights because he was the heavy betting favorite going into them. He defeated two overmatched and underdog opponents.Comment

I agree. Haney has paid his dues. He's done his time and has paid the price for glory and greatness. He traveled to another man's country in order to win his titles on foreign soil for short money while defending them at the same time.
subsequently, he defeated both Loma and Prograis all in the same calendar year. I am not saying that he should be fighter of the year. However, he should at least be in the conversation for best fighter of the year 2023.Comment

It means that he took risks by betting on himself. Like: Traveling half way across the world in becoming the undisputed lightweight champion of the world; While taking short money and defending those titles by fighting on another man's soil.
Which is both rare and unprecedented by way. Then subsequently defending them by defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko in a close fight. Then moving up to 140 to challenge and defeat the top 140 title holder in the world in Regis Prograis in a very lopsided decision.Comment

His fights in Australia where 2022 not this year, his had 2 fights and his fight against Lomachenko was controversial. Many thought he lost, in my book he lost 7 rounds to 5, the rounds he won where close but Loma dominated. He s should of had a, rematch if he won that fair, enough. Other fighters have had more dominated wins this year so No his not fighter of the year.
However, many people also thought that he defeated Loma too; Due to the latter's lack of activity. He just didn't do enough to win. He competed but he did not win it.
He mostly fought in spurts and took many rounds off in the process in order to conserve energy. Had Lomachenko fought the entire fight like he did in the 11th round then he would have won the fight easily.

I'm not going to make such claims because anyone with a quarter of a brain will realize it is ******ed, but if someone is seriously trying to argue his obnoxious dad is trainer of the year candidate then I'd be willing to claim that Shingo Inoue deserves it more because he is about to get 5 belts won by his two boxers in 2023. /sComment

Who is this "vast majority"? It seems to just be mostly angry forum edgelords like you who run with this. You probably represent less than 1% of the boxing audience.Last edited by dan-b; 12-11-2023, 03:07 AM.Comment

Haney had a good win over Prograis but in the eyes of most lost his other fight this year, I really doubt him or his father will be given the honor this year.
Inoue will likely be awarded fighter of the year if he beat Tapales. Crawford may get it as well. Benevidez should also be considered over Haney after two big wins this yearComment
