How good was Floyd?

A very overrated basic one two fighter who came along at a time when the American boxing establishment needed an African American star to sell post Jones Tyson Holy Bowe Toney Hopkins. Floyd was installed as the face of boxing and received protection. He was good but as Sugar Ray Leonard once said, "He was the same level as his father." Floyd was a very boring fighters and lacking personality too, very envious and jealous of any truly great fighter, he also took cheap shots at the likes of Jones, Tyson, Ali, GGG, Pacquiao, etc. True great fighters don't get all insecure and jealous when a great fighters takes some of their shine, they respect great talent, don't try to discredit it.Comment

Floyd is without a doubt the best skilled fighter of his generation. He is also in the conversation as the best defensive fighter ever, TBE not really imo.
But from WW and on, he will be criticized for his "retirements", match making, his unwillingness (to talk about other fighter bc they have x amount of losses, etc..) and just about all his A side antics. There are reasons for all the excuses whether it be about money or health. It got old quick, no one cares and the perception will always be a bad look.
But IMO, I think the thing that chaps Floyd and his fans is the lack of respect or love Floyd does not get from the general public. He never will if he stays in the public eye.
he needs to disappear, stay quiet and watch the appreciation for him will grow imo.

I am taking apart your subjective issues mate.
I have taken them apart, that is why you are changing the subject.
There will be similar people who big you up on the subject here, but plenty who will completely obliterate you.
I am done with the thread.

Gtfoh did you even watch boxing in the 70's and 80's or recite that off some internet site.
Hagler he was a ducked man, yet still cleaned out the mw division full fledged middleweights damn near 2x before his 1st high profile fight damn near 60 fights in. He staked his claim at mw and took on all comers in their prime.
Unlike Floyd who was a selective cherrypicker and you had to be a shell of yourself before he makes the fight.
Hagler got a boatload of prime mws plus Hearns, Duran, Srl, Mugabi look at all those all time greats at any weight while they were still in their prime what all time great did Floyd beat or even fight in their prime and please don't say a shopworn already ko'd Manny.
The guys that was a bad style mismatch that Hagler lost or drew with he avenged all of 'em except Srl and we know Srl welched on the rematch because the risk was too high. Floyd don't fight unless the risk is 30% or less.
Hagler just wasn't like Floyd when the division heated up Hagler was ready for that smoke. Unlike Floyd who was either retired or on vacation, or you needed pillow gloves or you had to take extra special testing.
You playing yourself for even thinking Floyd is on Hagler's level when it comes to respect and legacy. Hagler is the mans man not a sideshow coon clown like Floyd.Last edited by djtmal; 07-26-2022, 09:30 AM.Comment

Hagler was a natural MW, and he made smaller men like 135 Duran and 147 SRL and Hearns to fight him. He only became lineal in one division. Why didn’t he try moving up to 175 to fight Michael Spinks?
