Why did Floyd struggle so bad with Marcos "Bar brawler" Maidana tough-man contest style?

Floyd was fortunate enough to still have his legs and stamina for the second fight because as you said, his physical strength had diminished a great deal. Broner had more success dealing with Marcos physicality than Floyd.

I didn't know about the diet and training changes going into the rematch. That's interesting but also let's you know that Floyd understood the task at hand.
On the low Floyd had issues making Welter weight after he moved up put on muscle and whooped on canelo he was strong fit ripped all shots hurting the iron chinned canelo. IMO Floyd seems as if he was struggling post canelo he no lonher a ww and now a true jmw. Everything after Canelo his body was soft looked flabby, we heard iv stories and such

Maidana undid a lot of good work in that fight he was maybe too aggressive? He started to smother his own work but with that said he went right after Floyd and I wouldn't have begrudged him a getting a draw in that fight

2nd time around (expect for him hitting Mayweather flush and wobbling him) Floyd won easily and controlled Maidana which was impressive

It was in the post fight interview, were Ali seemed upset. As he was realizing that his former style and evening conditioning was not as potent. It was after that fight where Ali completely adapted his game, that was the last time we ever saw 'The float like a butterfly, and sting like a bee style'.

Ken Norton vs Muhammad Ali II is a interesting fight for many reasons, because I think that fight shows the dramatic change in training culture compared to today's heavyweights. Ali & Norton where boiling down to fight weight, where as Heavyweights pump themselves up to fight weight these days. Ali was very proud and boastful that he was at a light weight, and was slightly annoyed when Norton weighed in lighter.

212 pounds, only 8 pounds lighter than Usyk who? Pumps himself up to 221 pounds.

I said on another thread, that Usyk was not the same size as Muhammad Ali naturally.

After the fight Mayweather complained that his training and dietary changes had affected him negatively or not as he expected. He complained about feeling not as strong.

Technically maybe he was better in the second fight, but in the first fight he was clearly stronger. But those two fights seen his trademark strength decrease.

Mayweather was always a underrated fighter on the inside, because his his physical strength.

because he didnt buy into the whole bull**** that he was fighting superman. he got stuck into him like he did every other opponent, mayweather was a great fighter but many opponents showed him way too much respect

Typical, at the beginning, Floyd fights on the outside & uses his jab, pops the belly and goes upstairs. He does this very well. Takes a little out of you.
He DIDNT do this with Madiana. He FOUGHT. more aggressive. I remember wondering, why is he doing this? I remember at that time people really busting his balls about being boring fighter. I think he chose to do this and he ended up looking bad.
Madiana’s over hand right was a perfect style for Mayweathers “shell”.

Maidana took away a lot of Floyd’s spacing on the inside by smothering and using a lot of dirty tactics, it worked to a degree, but it wasn’t good enough because Maidana couldn’t consistently follow through by landing punches. You can outmuscled/outwrestle Floyd, but at the end of the day, you need to be able to consistently land clean eye-catching punches in order to win.

Because sometimes a fighter who's not that skilled but has an awkward style will give a more skilled textbook fighter problems. Look at Ali-Norton or Mayorga-Forrest.

Also, hot take: Porter would have given Floyd one of the hardest fights of his career. Porter was relentless, awkward and physically strong as an ox.
