Exactly. Some guy whos probably already impaired by alcohol or drugs, trying to use some **** they saw in the UFC because they think it will look cool, is not the same as someone who actually knows how to properly apply it. Grappling techniques especially have so many little technical subtleties to them that the average Joe isnt seeing, and without those subtleties they wont work.
Another thing dan_cov is overlooking, punches are all you need for 99% of the people you'll encounter on the street, because they arent trained fighters. Why would anyone who has any common sense bother to go for takedowns and throw kicks and **** if they can already KO somebody easily with a punch?
I agree. But some other things to take into account with that...
- MMA only really started in the 90s, what other sports that started in the 90s pay 6-7 figures for max 15-25 mins of work to top guys?
- if you look at payouts for UFC cards in like 2005 when MMA first started properly blowing up and compare them to today, the pay has already increased massively.
- The big money in boxing is concentrated into a very small number of fighters, way less than 1% of the talent pool. Taking into account UFCs pay, how many fighters they have signed to their roster, and MMAs talent pool being a lot smaller than boxings, theres probably a better chance of making a decent living from MMA than there is from boxing tbh, you just wont get those Canelo or Joshua type paydays.
I think the pay will increase further over time anyway, considering theres a constant push for it and its established as a major sport now.
