You're conflating boxing with all round striking, its a perfection of one form of striking, with none of the other stuff.

Muay thai is the best form of all round striking, but its all really tiny guys. Kickboxing is an overall higher standard of striking than MMA but theres been a fair few crossover fighters between the two and the skill gap isnt anywhere near as big as it was 20 years ago imo.

People watch MMA to see elite MMA, and at this point its its own thing pretty much. Simple.

Askren was KO'd in 5 seconds in MMA, went 1-2 in the UFC (the win was controversial) and is regarded as the worst striker ever to enter the UFC, literally the easiest MMA fighter Jake could have picked to box. Woodley even though hes 39 and was cut from the UFC after losing 4 fights in a row, admittedly shouldnt have lost to Jake Paul, not a great look. He did his usual thing of holding back trying to pick his shots too much though, which doesnt work as effectively with big gloves, shorter rounds, counts after the KD etc. In 4oz gloves I think Woodley would have KO'd him.
