Well everyone's got differing opinions. Some thought PAC was goat when he destroyed cotton and margarita. Some think beating Thurman made him goat. Some floydvfans think pac has to best nelo then josh and fury to be above floyd, some Floyd fans think no matter who PAC beat he's not above Floyd let alone goat believe it or not?
Highest ATG Ranking Achievable in Modern Boxing

For some young guy yo achieve top ten ever they have a massive mountain to climb. Take Tank for example. He woukd have to win a trilogy with Haney, beat Loma twice and then beat Josh Taylor in a trilogy to come only 1/3 of the way to where Pac is. Then he has to go and dominate 140 and win a bunch of fights at 147 and then unify 154 to be anywhere near close to where Pac is.
It's almost impossibleComment

Nowhere. Spence ranks nowhere now. Terrence Crawford has a legitimate demand for ATG ranking considering he is 1 of 7 lineal champs EVER (140 pounds) and is undefeated through 135, 140, and 147. He's never had 1 close fight and while his opposition hasn't been the best that was never his fault. You can't force PBC guys to fight...only Daddy Al can
There's a reason Roach said they picked Spence over Crawford. . .Comment

It could be the difference on how they fed themselves for the rest of the week for a lot of dudes in the depression era and earlier. And because these dudes had no choice but to fight regularly they were often carrying injuries going into fights and stuff... completely different sport back then.
I know it's fiction but you ever read Jack London's 'A Piece of Steak'?

Classic boxing short story about an aging prizefighter struggling to feed his family... the final coupla paragraphs are tragic but musta been a story familiar to many fighting men of the period. Shit, go to somewhere like Nicaragua or parts of Mexico and it's no different even today.
Umm.,. Spoiler alert I guess..
........
He had not a copper in his pocket, and the two-mile walk home seemed very long. He was certainly getting old. Crossing the Domain, he sat down suddenly on a bench, unnerved by the thought of the missus sitting up for him, waiting to learn the outcome of the fight. That was harder than any knockout, and it seemed almost impossible to face.
He felt weak and sore, and the pain of his smashed knuckles warned him that, even if he could find a job at navvy work, it would be a week before he could grip a pick handle or a shovel. The hunger palpitation at the pit of the stomach was sickening. His wretchedness overwhelmed him, and into his eyes came an unwonted moisture. He covered his face with his hands, and, as he cried, he remembered Stowsher Bill and how he had served him that night in the long ago. Poor old Stowsher Bill! He could understand now why Bill had cried in the dressing-room.Comment

Often, guys would travel for a fight under a promise then win and get so little of what was told to them they could not even afford the trip home. Many black fighters got stranded on one part of America or even in a different nation and had to earn money, in that sort of atmosphere, to get home.

If anyone wants more details on that sort of nonsense it's in black genesis. I could pull info but I don't have it memorized. Whos and wheres and whatnot. I know it happened though and if you need me to I can prove it...kinda, I can transcribe the book for youse.Comment

Black Genesis? I thought that was something else... Black Dynamite maybe? The Nat Fleisher one? heard good things but not read it. I'd go for some excerpts if you got it.

There were less belts in the past as well as 15 round fights. Being a champion was harder to achieve and actually meant something.
If the greats of the current era hope to be in the same category then they need to do something pretty special in my opinion.
Also the the sport hasn't advanced technically...it has actually regressed. Old styles like the peekaboo or the shoulder roll defense are going extinct, but not before having shown stretches of dominance against modern boxers.

I'm not going to say Spence has no bright future. But his best has yet to come. As with Thurman, it will be a good win for Pac. Not earth shattering.

I'm more of a Spence > Bud guy for the reason of Buds poor WW resume. He is no longer a 140 lber. Having a weak list of opposition may not be his fault entirely, you can't assume he would beat better comp. It's easy to look unbeatable if you face ''questionable'' opposition.
Picking Spence over Bud is still a daunting task.Comment

Spence will NOT be as good at 154 because a large part of his tactics relies on being bigger, taller, and longer. At 154 he loses some of those advantages and he definitely won't be as successful.

It's hilarious when people want to place Spence Top 10 PFP...hell Boxingscene has Spence #3 and Crawford isn't even on the list. People putting the cart before the horse calling Spence an ATG...truly hilariousComment
