  • Bob Arum says planned summer date for Fury-Joshua is “dead in the water”
Fury has not fought in 14 months.

Eddie Hearn has repeatedly insisted that Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua is all but signed, but Bob Arum isn’t convinced. He tells the Telegraph that the fight won’t land in the summer and may not even take place this year due to ongoing negotiations.
“It will take months for the Saudis to do their due diligence on such a huge deal. It is not just a site fee, there are ancillary demands from the Saudis stretching into the broadcast deals and other things, it could take months for it all to play out. It could even take until 2022 the way it looks right now. The fight in July or August is dead in the water as far as we are concerned. The two fighters need to go and have other fights this summer while the negotiations for that fight in the Middle East conclude.”

Frankly, Fury (30-0-1, 21 KO) and Joshua (24-1, 22 KO) should have already taken interim fights; Fury’s sitting on 14 months of inactivity and WBO mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk appears stuck in limbo while they figure out Joshua’s next move. We already saw Pacquiao-Crawford tank when the Middle Eastern money failed to materialize, and from where I’m sitting, Arum’s pessimism looks a lot more convincing than Hearn’s optimism.

If it’s this difficult to put such an obvious fight together under these circumstances, then don’t hold their careers hostage while you try to muddle through it all.

    • Anything that these promoters say can't be believed entirely. They are always jockeying for position and will lie for every penny. Hopefully they realize that there is too much money to pass and that the future is not guaranteed. I don't like that both guys have been on a long lay off especially Fury.

Which is why I asked who is ready for Joshua/Usyk way back in December.

The pandemic makes it hard to make top fights like this, period.

Their mistake is releasing false updates to the media.

        • I have a theory...Hearn/AJ are keen to make the fight next because to them Fury's inactivity is a significant advantage. Fury/Bob were open to it if it's in July but now that seems very unlikely, they'd rather have another fight first before going in with AJ.

If AJ ends up defending against Usyk and Fury has his third fight against Wilder, inactivity won't be an issue anymore. I wonder if Eddie would still be as keen to make the fight?

They spark interest doing that and measure the financial potential but just like that they can pull the plug or simply go another direction. All this is doing is giving the two fighters more exposure and tease the public with the fight.

Not too long ago TR said that they had an important announcement on Bud's next foe. We are still waiting... Promoters are shameless.

What it's doing is letting fighters go lengthy periods without fighting and and without making money.

What it's doing is making fans confused when one promoter says everything is smooth and the other one flip flops about packing his bags.

What it's doing is pissing off bookies who need to nail down dates.

That's what it's doing. NOT good.

I mentioned in another thread that I don't like the inactivity of both fighters especially Fury's. It gives it the built in excuse if either fighter loses. I don't know either how they are going to do two fights. There is no saying what will happen when they meet and they are titles involved. The winner will have all the titles and that unification exception is out of the window.

Edit: Also, what you just did was prove my point, by showing the power of US ppv. Without a huge site fee, Eddie stands no chance, which is exactly why this fight just fell apart. I wonder how much revenue Joshua-Ruiz 1 generated?
Joshua-Fury will be US PPV. Joshua isn't in Hearns DAZN deal.

Joshua isn't fighting Fury unless Fury wins the Wilder trilogy. And nobody in the US is paying for an AJ-Fury ppv at 3pm on a Saturday, which is exactly why Hearn needs the huge site fee for insurance.
