I could see myself going to the movies to watch this. Then again, all the blacks will be talking non stop throughout the show so might as well stay home and shell out the dough.
Roach Says Mayweather-Marquez Will Bomb on PPV

I can't say I am certain about a lot of things, but I am certain that the movie theater approach will be successful. That is how they sold big fights before they created PPV on television and it was very successful. And with the reasonable costs, $12 to $15, I think it could draw as many as 1 million extra fans who ordinarily would not purchase the fight because of the cost. I would bet my last dollar that, after the success of Mayweather/Marquez, Arum will put Cotto/Pac in movie theaters. To be honest, that is the only way I would buy Cotto/Pac because I certainly won't pay $50 for it on PPV.Having the fight in theaters will help get the mainstream public to watch it as well. Many of those who never cared for boxing will be curious to see fights on a giant screen among boxing fanatics. It's an unusual occasion.
The 24/7 series will help it gather momentum. But, who knows how well it will turn out?
The promoters are just taking a marketing risk with a different outlet.
If it's successful, you can bet others will follow suit and copy it.Last edited by big_james10; 08-29-2009, 02:28 PM.Comment

The movie theater approach will work because not every body has access to cable and ppv especially in ******s. This may effect ppvs in that people who can't get 4-5 of their buddies to help pay the $50 for the fight will usually go catch the fight at the local sportsbar, will instead go and watch the fight at the theaters. The fight may not be creating new markets; it may simply rearrange and reorganize the market.I can't say I am certain about a lot of things, but I am certain that the movie theater approach will be successful. Honestly tho, imho, people in general would rather see the fight in the comfort of their own homes than watch it with a bunch of rowdy strangers.Comment

Cheers, I was actually a little drunk when I wrote it, but I still stand by the sentiment.
Both fights will be good.
It's a shame Zab has pulled himself off the May-Marq card though. (And great that Soto-Valero might get made for Firepower - that alone will draw huge numbers).Comment

Thats not what I care about, as a boxing fan I'd like any fight to draw in alot of viewers, it being put in the movie theaters will do that. I'm sure many casual fans might become hardcore fans, that's why I'm happy it'll be free in Mexico and we'll get to hit the movie theaters to watch. Everythings going well, Mayweather hosting WWE got alot of ratings and 24/7 starts today. If alot of people are gonna get to watch it for free, hit the movie theaters or buy the PPV, then the fight will have a serious amount of viewers, this is great for the sport. The fight won't bomb but the ppv will.
Why you ask? Cuase if people are watching the fight in the theaters they arent watching it at home on ppv.
This obviously means that gbp and mp have given up on ppv. They both know that ppvs are the way to determine who makes the most money and who is the biggest draw in boxing. By providing a different outlet (showing the fight in theaters) they won't have to compete w/ pac/cotto in ppvs bought.
Its genius really cause it gives pbf/jmm an excuse whether the ppv fails or succeeds. If the ppv succeeds they can claim to have created a new market for boxing while retaining the the same ppv #s. If the ppv fails they can blame it on the fact that the theaters drove away potential ppv customers.
So all their bases are covered. Obviously it is a smokescreen to give the winner some equity against pac (should he win) in the negotiations.Comment

I am a dedicated PPV subscriber. I would pay for to watch Mayweather\ Marquez. I will not pay for PAC\cotto. Mainly because of all the bull**** that freddie and PAC bring to the table. Demanding to much for a fight. Example Making Cotto fight at a catch weight then forcing him to put his title on the line after agreeing to the catch weight. Now theres a bull**** Diamond Belt. C'Mon people. There is no such thing as a Diamond Belt. Now we are making **** up!!!!!!!!!!!!Comment
