The most disputed fight in boxing history. I've watched it 50 times and each time I give it to Hagler. SRL gameplan was weak potshot jabs then running away. He did zero damage to Hagler during the fight. You can't win a fight without one notable punch.
Was Marvelous Marvin Hagler robbed vs SRL?

I was a HUGE Hagler fan (my favorite fighter all time) and at the time, I hated Leonard. This is extremely painful to say but, no, Leonard deserved the decision. -
I think the 'damage' argument is the only one that gives Hagler a shot. People assume that Hagler's punches did more more damage and Leonard's were ineffectual. That allows you to count MMH's punches as being worth more than Leonard's and then you can find early rounds for Hagler.
Well it looked to me like both fighters took the punches well. In most rounds Leonard was landing more, clean punches. You can't call them ineffectual just because Hagler came through them. Likewise you can't call Hagler's more effective just because it was Hagler throwing them.
I watched it again after hearing of Hagler's passing. And I still give it pretty clearly to SRL.Comment

I have to watch it again, it's been many years from the last time.
But my opinion has always been that Leonard's flashy flurries conquered the judges as opposed to a slightly fading Hagler, who had left half of himself in the John Mugabi war.Comment

Which 5 did you give to Hagler though? I'll bet you could also make a pretty comfortable case for swinging a few of them to SRL?I did a rbr scoring of this fight awhile back.

I had it 7-5 SRL, but of note 3 of those rounds I gave to SRL I considered close. So it could easily went either way. Bottom line is it was just a close fight whoever woulda won not a robbery.
My view is that there were plenty of clear SRL rounds within the first half of the fight. Nothing to that point was clearly to Hagler, though you could potentially find one or two. You almost find yourself looking for signs from Hagler that would allow you to give him a round.
Definitely a tough fight to score. Part of it is just what sort of work you prefer. But definitely no robbery.Comment
