Tyson vs Lewis Primes

Well it was surprising but things like that happen.I did not say he was a walk-over. Mercer would have given anyone a tough fight, but Lewis should have won a wider decision than he did, and would have done on his best nights, IMO.
And IMO the version of Tyson who had Rooney in his corner would have won a clear UD against Mercer, rather than a majority decision.
You know what was a pretty good fight with Mercer?
When Larry Holmes beat him. I just kept thinking how is Holmes doing what he is doing at that stage of his career/life.Comment

Whatever the reasons, if you agree that he was a much better fighter when he was with Rooney, then that is the only version of Tyson that is relevant to this thread. And whatever the reasons, if you agree that he was a much better fighter when he was with Rooney, then they are reasons and not excuses.Last edited by Dave Rado; 05-25-2009, 08:40 PM.Comment

Basically what you were trying to say without quoting word for word.
Why does that not surprise me. The Tyson you talk about beats godzilla, but having said that, that Tyson does not exist because no fighters is as good as you are making a prime Mike out to be.Comment

His results were better but having said that he did not have any Evander Holyfield's on his resume so you'd pretty much expect that.
Its easier to look better against lesser fighters.Comment

You're talking complete rubbish. I simply said (in response to someone who said that even on a bad night Lewis would have knocked all of Tyson's opponents into the next century) that Lewis on a bad night lost to McCall and Rahman; on a fairly good night struggled with Bruno and Mercer; and on a very good night struggled twice with a past his prime Holyfield. And that Larry Holmes, who that poster had said was shot vs. Tyson, later beat Mercer. All of which is simply objective fact.
You must be confusing me with some other poster in some other thread. The Tyson I'm talking about is ranked around #10 in the Heavyweight ATG list. Not #1. And I didn't even say that a prime Tyson would beat Lewis, only that he'd give him a very tough fight. So you're being absolutely ridiculous. And AFAIK there isn't a single serious boxing historian who doesn't rate Tyson at around #10, so for you to imply that you have to be a fanboy to rate him that highly just makes you look silly.
That's what makes your posts frustrating, you keep veering from rational discussion one minute to making ridiculous and obviously inaccurate claims the next.Last edited by Dave Rado; 05-25-2009, 08:54 PM.Comment

So now you're saying you don't think he was any better in terms of boxing skills while he was with Rooney than subsequently, that he didn't decline at all, and that he only looked better because of his level of opposition? Talk about being inconsistent!!!!!!

What ever you were trying to use it as a mark of how Lewis struggled with him, that says it all about what kind of fighter you view him as.
Why does it make me look silly. I have already said in this thread Tyson is a GREAT fighter. You are the one making yourself look silly be meeting hard facts with would, coulda, shoulda and excuses.
I dont debate excuses.Comment
