exactly and floyd started fighting at a much lower weight than when he retired so he had more opportunities to fight at more weight classes and for more titles. cotto started out at 135-140 and he's now at 147 but his height wont allow him to go up farther than 147-154. there's a big difference starting out at 135-140 then starting out at were floyd started out, im assuming he started at featherweight
What does Mayweather have to do to earn everyone's respect?

do you think 13 pounds would affect cottos skill set that much????
cotto walks around at 170 and you said he was 155 at the age of 13....
So I agree with you that If Cotto goes up to MW and wins a title Ill be surprise...because that would mean he exceed expectations that boxing fans like your self has put on him....
but guess what???
thats what great fighters do...they exceed expectations...
they do things the real good fighter can not do and would not do.
like Michael Herron once wrote:
When you look pass the money, Mayweather and even the former P4P king Roy Jones are actually truer to pure boxing than most big names in the sport. These two fighters are actually marketed for their skill set, not their personalities. De La Hoya on the other hand, sells his Pay-Per-Views based on personality and charm alone, not boxing ability. Is this why we watch boxing, to see personalities joust or skills clash? When you pay to see Floyd, the expectation is that you will see the best skills in boxing. When you pay to see Oscar, there are no expectations, he could win or lose with no penalty. If Mayweather or Jones lose a fight, they lose everything. They are burdened with having to be perfect. The repercussions of Jones' losses to Tarver and Johnson is the perfect example of why Mayweather knows he can't lose. If he were to be defeated, proponents and detractors in this “unforgiving sport” would attempt to destroy everything he has fought for.
Mayweather knowing this STILL moved up 5 weight classes giving up all physical advantages to prove he was great therefore risking everything he has work for .. just to achive greatness...
so when is cotto going to decide to get out of his comfort zone and attempt greatness...
I only hold cotto to this standard because of the standards you hold for mayweather and not even realizing the standards you are giving floyd... cotto cant even meet.
When you have something quoted on Mayweather and constantly talk/make threads about him and againest Cotto - with "facts" ; it kinda disturbs.Comment

He'll get my respect if he hires Norman Stone as a co-trainer. With him and Roger Mayweather in the corner I don't know if any human could withstand that punishmentComment

this was about floyd and cotto, but now you mention duran. well you got me with duran. if cotto would've picked his fights right like floyd did(baldomir and hatton at 147, oscar at 154) it could've been a different story. but he was too busy defending his titles at 140-147. its more important to defend your title than pick and choose different title holders and not defendComment

Cotto can fight at LHW right know if he wants to. That doesnt mean, hell perform at his level, or be any good!!!!!!!!!!!!Comment

How Floyd would earn my respect (and no, Im not foolish enough to think he wants it) would be to act like himself. Dont "play a character" and act like the bad guy just because he "wants to sell tickets." I think he acts that way because he doesnt know who he is, and because if he says he is playing the badguy role, then he can feel less hurt that people dont accept and cheer for him. I imagine It would hurt more to be so disliked if he were being himself. Just playing "Floyd" and getting booed would suck worse then playing "Money May" and getting booed. So he acts like a WWF guy and pretends they only boo him because he is the "heel." But I respect his ability as a fighter. Regardless of how little I think of the man, he is one of the most talented fighters I have ever seen.Comment
