Barrera: "They Should Have Stopped it in The First"

Former three division champion Marco Antonio Barrera says that his fight with Amir Khan should have been stopped in the first round. During the action in round one, a clash of heads opened up a huge gash on Barrera's head. Barrera says the cut was no better in the first than it was in the fifth. He couldn't see from the first round on. The fight was evantually stopped in the fifth, with Barrera losing a one-sided technical decision. [details]

Was i the only one that knew how this would turn out after that cut on barrera? It was so predictable, i told every one around me after the cut, just watch they're gonna let it go on and stop it on rd. 5 so they can go to the scorecards, khan would have still beaten barrera he is just to big and strong for mab, but if this fight would have been any where in the world but england, the fight gets stopped right away, that was a nasty cut and the blood was all over mabs eye, funny how the doctor looked at it in the 4th rd and let the fight go on only to stop it a couple of minutes later in the very next rd so khan could be awarded a win...

I guarantee if Barrera didn't get cut until the 5th, and the ref stopped it in the tenth, everybody would claim he could have went on.

People are just dumb. Barrera wanted to carry on, and now he and his fans have to live with the decision.

the cut wasn't that big in the first, that's why it continued. did it get bigger as the fight went on? - sure. but the people came to see a fight and they weren't about to stop it just yet after 1 or 2 min.

of course not. it was conveniently stopped right when they could go to the scorecards. i'm not saying MAB had much of a chance, but that stoppage was pathetic

As always I'm reading some comments from punks that don't know about boxing. First of all I saw the fight and the cut was bleeding really bad, it should have been stopped in the second round. It should have been up to the doctor, but of course since we''re in england they are going to do anything to win. This is so ****ty, the only way Khan could get a win was with the help of everyone else, if the fight would've been stopped before the 4 round it would have been a NC, but of course the doctor was going to push all the way to the 5 round that way Little Kunt can get his win. Enough with Kunt proved everyone wrong, he beat a man that had one eye WOW huge accomplishment LOL

He was showing maturity by sticking to the gameplan that Roach set for him. He had a 3 inch height advantage as well as the reach advantage by several inches. Staying outside and only coming in to attack was what he was supposed to be doing; it was obvious that Barrera was having a hard time reaching him. He said after the fight that as long as he stayed behind the jab, used distance properly, and was patient that there was no way he could lose.

Roach deserves more respect as a trainer.

They are excuses....He's not acting like a pro here taking away from his opponents win.

I'm a huge MAB fan but over the years he's made some crazy excuses after losing fights!

He done it with Jones and he done it with Pacquiao.

what excuse did he have for the paquiao loss? barrera is right the ref should have stopped it but instead they wanted barrera to quit and you know he will not quit, did you see how big that cut was?

I'm sorry, but that really is crap. It's not 'funny' in the least; it's not remotely unusual for a doctor to let it go the first time it is referred to him but to stop it (whether the fighter wants it or not) the second time. When a doctor is referred to a second time again it usually IS in the next round or shortly afterwards. When has anyone ever seen a doctor look at an injury in the fourth, let it go, have it referred to him again six rounds later and THEN stop it? It just doesn't happen.. in the UK, US or anywhere else.
