no bull****....there were enough names during Toney's career to have cemented an ATG claim

I agree and I don't call just anybody an "all-time great".

I believe his best ever performance was probably against Mike McCallum the first time. I rate McCallum very highly but Toney may have gotten the best of him in that fight although it's a hard fight to score.

It's disappointing that the same boxer who can go toe-to-toe with McCallum, KO Michael Nunn and beat Jirov at cruiserweight can struggle so badly against Tiberi, Thadzi and Griffin. The same boxer who in many fights landed over 400 punches ran out of stamina without even throwing as many against Roy Jones.

Come on Griffin is not bad at all! But yeah if he was in shape...

Easily an ATG. EASILY. Unlike Jones and MAyweather he would have fought everyone anyone wanted him to fight multiple times.

I still see him losing to Jones because of styles. But I doubt Hopkins would have the same stature he has now, if Toney shone as he could have.

I think he would've done slightly better. However, remember that cruiserweight and heavyweight have been miserable since he has moved up. Not hating, but maybe we wouldn't be talking about hiim as much if those divisions were good and had guys that could take him out.

              Still, great fighter.

I don't think anyone wants him at heavyweight... Just imagine him at 175 RIGHT NOW.
James Toney is already a first ballot hall of famer! So I don't understand how how you say he 'HAD' smarts and skills? After Jirov fight in 2003 Hopkins was on the brink of signing to fight James at Cruiser but came to his senses that Toney would send him back home busted up black and blue. Hopkins is a great fighter at Middle and Super Middle but not at the higher weights. He's even a small Light Heavy.

True, but the point was if Toney had dedication in regards to training/making weight, he most likelym wouldn't have fought at Cruiser/Heavy.
He'd have fought at 160-175 for much, much longer.

                    EXACTLY!

the 'dedication' part of the formula would constitute some self discipline and a possible reign at that weight range

and as WMUTE mentioned, he woulda fought anyone and everyone...

in fact, he's the type of bad ass MFR that would have gone to Wales and challenged a still prime Calzaghe
