I'm not disagreeing that most fighters do move up in weight as their bodies develop, I'm just saying that some fighters carry their power and speed up with them, some don't, but that the rankings aren't based on that ability in practice, and Hopkins is a good example of that. Bob Foster is another good example - his ranking was not hurt by his inability to be competitive at Heavyweight.

It is a factor but in my opinion not a huge one in terms of The Ring's rankings in practice. Most people on here seem to believe Hatton is not currently ranked in the P4P top 10. But they are wrong. He is ranked #8.Comment

Why do you say that it's not? It absolutely is. The Ring does very much factor in moving up - as evidenced by Shane Mosley moving up and defeating Oscar, for instance.Comment

Yes, it helps, and it certainly helped solidify Pacquiao's status when he moved up to beat Diaz for the WBC World Lightweight Championship and HOF'er De La Hoya. Regardless of whether the P4P ranking system was actually created with weight jumps in mind, it does influence it to some degree. As I said in a much earlier post, it's Pacquiao's overall achievements -- including the success he's had at higher weights -- that have gotten him and kept him in the top spot.

I agree that they arent based solely on that. But it is a factor. Thats why I said I have no problem with Hatton being ranked in the top 10, but he will not be #1 by beating Pac.I'm not disagreeing that most fighters do move up in weight as their bodies develop, I'm just saying that some fighters carry their power and speed up with them, some don't, but that the rankings aren't based on that ability in practice, and Hopkins is a good example of that. I agree it's factored in, but I don't think it's a huge factor. I think the fact that DLH was already considered to be a future Hall of Famer and the fact that Mosley was already highly ranked were more important. Otherwise how do you explain Hopkins going to #1 after beating the naturally smaller Trinidad?Comment

I think almost everyone, including most of the knowledgable Hatton fans, agree that he won't be #1 solely on the basis of beating Pac (and I think he's unlikely to beat him anyway). But if he were to beat both Pac and JMM decisively, then I think there's a fairly good chance that The Ring would rate him at #1, although I think even that's far from certain. It would be interesting to know Cliff Rold's take on that, though.Comment

It really is. Let's make another example, although a very extreme one for the sake of getting the point across:
A very light fighter, maybe someone like Darchinyan, moves up to heavyweight and beats someone there. It wouldn't even have to be a good, highly-ranked heavyweight. If he did this, it would influence everyone's opinion of how good a fighter he is and affect his P4P status.
Weight does influence the system.
