This poll is a bit ******.

Who deserves respect? Any man who gets in the ring, risks death or permanent injury, and puts his life on the line for our entertainment. The way the poll is worded makes it out like one is worthy of more respect than the other.

And here, have a sick bucket.

Dude, give it up. The CASUAL fan has no idea of this. The CASUAL sports fan outnumbers the hardcore fan GREATLY.

It's like comparing an average computer user to an overclocker.
You know you're right. Whenever the greats are mentioned Sven Ottke is in the first sentence.

Look, whatever. My point is that Marciano is remembered for things other than his record. He has stories.

But you do make a good point. Calzaghe will, fairly or unfairly, be considered in the Sven Ottke ilk rather than with Marciano.

          Now.

If you're a kid and you go ask your grandfather, he'll know. Your daddy might too but young fans wont know much about Joe Louis at all.

I'm sorry, he was a great fighter (possibly the best heavyweight ever) but he doesn't have the fame Ali does.

What is the point of this thread?

OK, I'm sure we have a good mix of people here, doctors, lawyers, scientists, bus drivers, door-to-door salesmen, toilet cleaners, students and unemployed bums. But do we have any with a career, let alone a boxing career, so stratospherically successful that they can 'respect' or otherwise the 'career choices' of either of two of the best fighters in the world?

              Thought not...

                  You can absolutely compare them.

Joe deserves more respect, because he takes good care of himself.

With Hatton's weight gains and losses from beer and junk food, he'll be shot long before he's Joe's age.

joe fought for a vacant belt for an upstart , not yet major org. the wbo was considered a minor belt for most of the time he was champ.

ricky fought another champion in his next fight.

joe didn't fight another beltholder for 9 years.

ricky jumped up to a higher division to challenge another champ soon afterwards.

it took joe what 'til he was 36? 37?

ricky fought the #1 p4p fighter in the world and is gonna fight another #1 p4p fighter next year.

joe could have done that but he didn't.

                      ricky > joe
