What about when the American HW's ****** in the 80's, and then the division became strong again in the 90's. Did people just lose interest boxing in that time, went to the NFL/NBA, then in the 90's go back to boxing?

whatever you need to tell yourself in order to rationalize it

Logic works like this, Soviet Union collapses, Slavs are allowed to compete, Slavs dominate......

I never get that "NFL/NBA" argument....but whatever makes you sleep at night.

Do you think there is no basketball or other sports in Europe? I guess if you are a big man than you are forced into boxing right?...And in US you are not...

US simply has competition now, due to the fact that ex Soviet guys can now fight pro, and at the moment they are leading the pack, its up to the Americans to catch up.

THere is also a style issue here. All these "robotic euros" fight fundamental boxing. Fundamentals WIN games. As much as the jab/right hand style might be borring to watch its the winning formula.

It's like watching a bunch of And1 ballers play a bunch of scrony no bodies and the nobodies winning because htey play fundamental basketball and the other is trying to render Vince Carter.

i agree with this wise man, he took the time to articulate what i was too lazy to do

Hearing everyone from Lamply to Atlas to any American writer say the same b.s. NFL NBA etc actually makes me pity them a little

those leagues weren't created in the last 10 years

I dont really care if you guys think im just making excuses cause it maybe be an excuse to you but really its just my opinion.

NFL and NBA completely dominate the sports world in USA not to mention NHL and MLB be very popular too boxing gets next to no media coverage unless you look for it, America is all about whats popular and whats the the big fad and i know its sad to say it but boxing for at least right now is not it.

10 years ago boxing had plenty of followers with big names like oscar, trinidad, and roy jones... look at all the other weight classes from 175 down there may not be a champion from USA but almost every weight class has a ranked contender from the USA. but all of a sudden when it gets to the big guys it just drops off.

Whether you guys just think I'm being way too bias or not i dont care cause in my mind im looking at this logically. But im not that smart so decide for yourselfs

I agree with the thread starter. Back in the day boxing was a way to make a lot of money. Boxing was a top 3 sport and when it came to money it was number 1 on the list of athletes. Great athletes went into boxing. Now that America is very diverse and has many sports that offer athletes a lot of cash it is a much easier decision. You can make a living as an athlete, making a ton of money doing something much safer than boxing.

Yes, Americans do have more competition but do not kid yourselves. The best American athletes no longer choose boxing as a career. Call it how you want, say they are soft or whatever but its just logical. If you could make 25 million playing basketball or 25 million getting punched in the head what would you choose?

I think the threadstarter had a really good idea actually. I don't see why everybody is shooting it down like his post doesn't make any kind of sense?

Of course not all of the blame goes to the athletes choosing to go to other (better paying and less injury prone) sports. But he does have a point! Boxing is the toughest sport in the world. As a boxing fan, don't you agree? I think this sport that we enjoy is the absolute toughest on the human body and mind. It also doesn't pay very well considering the amount of hard work and dedication. The threadstarter does have a point in that young kids nowadays would have less interest in starting up boxing as compared to NFL/NBA, etc. Boxing isn't in the nation's limelight as it once was! If Ali or SRL fought back in the day, it was on prime time national tv! I can't even imagine that **** as a 25 year old living in the 60 dollar ppv era.

I think what he was trying to say was that I'm sure we've lost a few possible "could have been" champions to other sports here in America. Just statistically speaking. Especially considering how many athletic and naturally gifted some of American athletes are.

I agree with the other posters that responded too that the heavyweight division in America has gone soft as well. You don't see tough bastards like Shavers and Foreman in this day and age. They don't make em like they used to...
