The Reason Why There Are No Good American Heavyweights

    NFL, NBA simple as that...

If you have the strength/speed/size/athleticism as a kid 99 times out of 100 you will pursue a career in football rather than boxing.

9/10 times, you have to be in a top football college to persue a career in football. Many young black males dont have that opportunity. Where as in boxing, you can be straight from the street, and as long as you are a good boxer, who made it to the olympics, etc.. You can make it

LeBron was one of the best high school football players in ohio and he said himself that he didn't continue playing because he didn't like getting tackled, you really think someone like him would've had the attitude to be a great boxer

and a guy like Vince Carter has freakish athletic abilities yet during games he settles for fade aways from beyond the 3 because he's afraid of driving down the lane

don't get me wrong I'm sure there were some potential great boxers that were deterred from entering the sport and instead pursued other sports but there's a lot of of other great athletes that never had the heart to be pro fighters

Yeah i agree but almost all kids arent gonna start boxing then, the chance of earning a living by boxing is slim to none.. and at the age of 18 most people wont start boxing

I agree, not everyone with athletic talent makes it to the pros of the NFL and NBA. Now the ones that did make it quite possibly could have made it in boxing but you have to be a special type of person to box and just because you're athletic doesn't mean you can fight.

IMO the people who get invoved in are usually knuckleheads of from the street. They got problems and aggression and are usually alone. So boxing becomes an outlet as well as a sport. However, in football or basketball etc. it's a team sport. You have to depend on each other...yadda yadda yadda.

But someone from the street is usually out for themselves. How can they adapt to the idea of depending on one another?

I just think that they're aren't that many big ass "thugs" who would like to pursue boxing seriously. In America at least.

American heavyweights are terrible because their have lost their hunger, will and determination. America is a laid back easy country, the big men are spoiled and have gone soft.

Eastern European heavyweights are stronger, hungrier and more determined. They will continue dominating for a very long time...You weak ass excuse makers better get used to it!
                exactly, america has gone soft.

but the U.S can still make good fighters at lower weights. the 'other sports' arguement has been made for decades, think it was liebling who started it, i think he's right to be honest, it makes sense for bigger athletic guys to play better paying, more popular sports that offer college scholarships, as opposed to boxing, where even if you're awesome you might never make it due to politics and BS

Is that the reason why the US didn't win a single gold or silver in ANY WEIGHT DIVISION in the 2008 Olympics?

Is that why the US have no titleholders at 168, and only one at 175?

I think it has to do with the fact that the rest of the world has caught up and is passing the US in boxing.
