Dawson is not Lacy or Kessler or Pavlik. He deserves a shot because he's the only one at 175 left.
Tarver/Johnson/Bhop/RJJ all lost. there is no one left to fight. HBO will not pay for any of these accept Johnson and Bhop.

calzaghe
I will admit i was not convinced that calzaghe was the real deal but after last night i am a convert. I see why people would call for him to fight dawson but if he doesnt to me he proved himself to be one of the best of his era. By not fighting Dawson it would keep me from saying that he was the best when he retired. But he has made a case for being great.
He took out lacy, who was undefeated and no one gave him a chance against. Same with kessler who is now the best super middle weight in the world. He got a decision over hopkins which whether you thought he won or lost it was close enought to say he belonged in the ring with him. and you saw what bernard just did to pavlik. I am convinced joe would have MURDERED pavlik and i admit i am a pav fan. Now he finishes with a win over roy which whether he was washed up or not only 2 other people can claim legitimate victories over him. so regardless of who he fought before lacy he ends with two previously undefeated fighters and two future hall of famers thats a great career IMO.

shutting someone out while playin with them is worst than someone just landing a lucky punch.
joe never looked like he was going for the k.o. he wanted to put on a show for all his haters

My take on this Dawson Calzaghe twist:
Even though I hate to echo Max Kellerman, his point with regards to Lennox Lewis leaving the sport when there was no one left with a legitimate threat rings true.
If Calzaghe hangs up his gloves to today. He will end his career on a high beating two hall of fame fighters (all be it RJJ was Shot, and the Hopkins fight was close). The later half of his career is respectable and he will leave the sport in his prime. BUT although it is arguable he will still have his naysayers.
His career will be a great career.
Now: If Calzaghe added Dawson into the mix and wins... he leaves the sport with all questions answered and confirmed. Dawson is so to speak what kessler was @ SMW to the calzaghe legacy. There is absolutely nobody left to fight @ 175.
Ending your career (an unbeaten decorated career) fighting a young hungry skilled fighter is a very dangerous decision - But its what all time greats are meant to do, its the epitome of TRUE champions.
Joe Calzaghe is a legend today, but he could push the bar that little further and become a true thorough modern day boxing legend that cleared out two divisions of what was on offer.
The arguments of the money and that Dawson doesn't bring enough to the table. In my eyes is not valid. Calzaghe has stated that he is going to continue in the boxing sport in the form of promotion - a fight in cardiff promoted by his company would be the ideal opportunity to enter the promotion game. Calzaghe will sellout the millennium stadium shadow boxing, it might not do record breaking ppv buys but I feel it would perform. Dawson would have to accept that he will have to travel, he will have to accept a considerably smaller purse and have possibly no cut on the TV rights - but what Dawson gets in return is his opportunity to break officially into the big time...
The conclusion is Calzaghe has almost everything to lose and Dawson has everything to gain, in todays boxing game where everything is based on that "0" it makes the chances look very slim that this will happen.
But one thing that I think many true boxing viewers will agree with, calzaghe does not want to retire today, the character of calzaghe wouldn't end his career in a fight so one sided - he claims he thrives of the challenge - today there is no bigger challenge than Dawson.Last edited by S1MANC; 11-09-2008, 05:02 PM.
