Roy Jones is probably my favorite modern fighter, ever. And not once did I ever feel like he had a chance in this. Did I root for him? Sure. But for Joe Calzaghe to win a fight in which he was the 5 to 2 betting favorite is by no means a screaming endorsement of his status (whatever that may be).

Sorry, but people are gonna have to try harder if they want to put Joe on that pedestal. Stop grasping at straws and pick something legitimate to reward him with.
You're right. The Kessler fight was the one that put Calzaghe on the map. This fight was really a showcase. It didnt mean much, if anything on paper.

The thing is Joe has alway been a great boxer he just hasnt been able to show it to the masses for one reason or the other, I knew he would beat RJJ easier than he would B-hop just because of their fighting style.

You illiterate fuck!! Go and learn how to spell and then come back and have a debate!

And... Joe beating a young, undefeated champion would be far far better to his legacy than beating a 39yr old shot fighter.

He already did it, twice, against Lacy and Kessler. His legacy is beyond secure.

It damn near hurt watchin Roy get schooled the way he used to school motha****as. He was landin some good shots but nothin stopped Joe from pickin him apart. I was stunned lookin at Roy cut up and blinded. He lost decisively but fought well enuf that Joe C should get props for the win instead of people sayin Roy was too shot.

calzaghe beat him well, but as a brit i was supporting roy cos joe c does not deserve to have a win on his record against roy jones. its embarrassing that joe would pretend this makes him a legend. jones hasnt beaten a light heavy contender since 2003. there are two light heavies fighting today who have both ko'd jones, tarver and johnson, and dawson has beaten both. any of those guys would have been far better fights. then there is hopkns who would have destroyed joe imo if he fought like he did against pavlick. then there is pavlick himself. i dont care what you say about his loss to bernard, that doesnt mean calzaghe would beat him, pavlik ko'd taylor who beat hopkins so just cos he beat hopkins, which he didnt, it was a draw at best for joe, that doesnt mean he beats pavlick. if joe wants to be a legend, he should fight all 4 of those guys before, but he is going for the safe options and then complaining he doesnt get the credit he deserves. thats just hypocritical.

Hopkins is a legend, but even so pretty much everything you say is spot on lol I really do rate the man, but going down holding your balls after a slap in the leg really riles me. As for this fight, yes Roy is shot but even a shot Roy is a threat, he isn't exactly feather-fisted and uncapable so Calzaghe deserves credit for dominating him rather than just beating him. I agree with the people who say his status was secured beating Kessler and Lacy too - this fight was just a money-spinner.

As for Bad Chad Dawson, he's the latest in a long line of fighter's every Calzaghe-hater builds up just because they need someone to beat Calzaghe. I'm not saying Dawson doesn't have the talent, I'm just saying if they did fight and Calzaghe won, there'd be someone else younger who Calzaghe "must beat to secure his legacy." How much longer must this go on before people let him be? Calzaghe is nearing 37 and he's already lost his power, I wouldn't want to see him doing a Roy and keep going too long. Every major boxing publication on the planet has Calzaghe as the second greatest fighter in the world, that's enough for me. He's not my favourite, not even in my top 5 favourite to watch, but like the majority of unbiased fans I am aware of his class. A bum could not beat Reid, Bika, Lacy, KESSLER, Hopkins and a shot Jones Jnr.

On a sidenote, Jones Jnr was one of my favourite fighters and possibly the greatest fighter I've seen in the last 20 years in his prime (even though he avoided many threats during that time if you look back), and it was particularly difficult watching him lose last night in that way - I wish he'd retire so I could remember him only for his brilliance.

We can speculate all day on what would have happened had they fought in their, or Roy's, prime, but the majority on these boards picking RJJ weren't saying anything about his age leading up to the fight OR after that knock down. I'm not a huge fan of either, but it's a bit unfair to Calzaghe to call Roy washed up only AFTER Calzaghe made him look washed up.

oh my days some of you guys chat some garbage. Why cant you just give Joe his props the guy is only 3 years younger than RJJ so its not like he's fought an old man who by the way everyone was creaming over again when he beat Trinidad not so long ago.
Joe will rightfully take his place in boxings hall of fame along with RJJ.
Stop hating on a fighter who deserves his recognition, how many more fighters has this guy got to beat for you Tools to stop slating him?
The guy should retire rather than give you muppets the satisfaction of saying see he got beaten by...............

There will always be someone who us better at some point it time but funnily enough Joe hasnt seen 1 for over ten years.
