Yanks thought Floyd KOing Ricky didn't come with a price.

I'm still not sure whether "Floyd KO'd Ricky" or the ringpost did. It all happened in a split second. There's no doubt that Mayweather hit him, not really hard, but he was coming into it qwhivh may have added to the power. Also, for whatever reason, the punch, itself, or he was momentarily stunned by a punch he didn't see, BUT he fell forward and hit his head a massive whack on the post. Padded or not, it wasn't built to protect against a full-bodied inrushing fall.

Let someone hit post a hefty whack , and even with boxing gloves, he'd be at risk of breaking his hand.

Just my opinion.

Ricky was 29 vs a 31 year old Mayweather. Ricky is STILL in is prime. Roy has been shot since 2003. Don't compare Mayweather to Calzaghe, they are completely different. Mayweather at 23 was beating undefeated p4p KO artist Chico corrales whereas Joe was building up his resume on BUMS. Both Lacy and Kessler's resumes look like **** compared to Corrales. Truth is Joe, like Marciano before him, has beaten the best of the previous generation and bailed out on the sight of the current one. The champion is Chad Dawson, he's not some kid coming up, he is ALREADY there, and he's the only one left. Still 40 year old, shot since 03 Jones was more appealing. No surprises here if you know Joe.

Please...PLEASDE don't use the Corrales fight to laud Mayweather's "greatness"....

I've sent in, several times, an article by CKStewart on this very fight, it's pre-fight and fight circumstances.

I personally know, that Corrales, having bad weight troubles for quite a while, had publically abandoned the 130 lb class, and when the Mayweather fight was offered weighed over welterweight class. The guy was just under 6'. At the same time he had very bad legal problems and was going to jail after the fight. He was in debt up to his eyeballs for legal and other payments. He NEEDED this fight which he entered into just for the money.

In a prefight interview, which I have, he looked awful, and when asked about his attempts to lose weight, characteristically, all he said was, after thinking deeply,"it isn't easy"......

Stewart has placed on record that at the weigh in, which he attended, Corerales had a grey complection, looked like death, ribs sticking out the very same as the concentration survivors, has failed the first try, and via sweat box just made the second, ready to collapse. He writes that he knew right then, that Corrales had NO CHANCE, although he would have backed him to win if he'd been in normal shape.
Also less than 2 weeks before the fight Corrales had his wisdom teeth extracted, and had hardly trained since. His manager and trainer said the very same thing, his mental state was so bad, because of the jail sentence ab=nd the deebts, that he spent all his time playing computer games and had to be forced to train.

Larry Merchant, on TV said, thatpassingvCorrales' dressing room just before the fight, he saw him stuffing a huge sandwich into his mouth like a starving tiger. His words not mine.

You may recall in the fight that Corrales kept going down from obviously soft punches in the strangest way, collapsing each time in sections, like a tower folding in on itself. None of this was natural. The guy had overloaded himself from weigh-in time until just before the fight with food and liquids, and when in the fight, looked as if he was walking through molasses, not ANYTHING like the killer Corrales evryone had ALWAYS seen.

So..... all in all, Please don't use the Corrales win as an example, it's VERY tainted.

Strange how people are praising Jones for losing, whilst putting down Calzaghe for winning.

Same happened with the Hopkins fight.

Im not sure what else Calzaghe could of done in. Seems it impossible for him to convince his critics.

They praise Hopkins for beating Pavlik, yet still say Calzaghe beat 'old man' Hopkins!

People are "praising" Jones for losing???

Calzaghe is claimed to be a "Great."

Pavlik was yet to be tested on this level. He is now deemed "exposed" by losing to a 43 year old fighter that is past his prime.

Sort of like Lacy was exposed.

Styles make fights.
It was a big deal beacuse Pavlik beat Taylor who beat Hopkins...Hopkins hasn't fought "great" in a long time...you add that to the age factor, it's an upset.

Personally, I think it was a bit overrated myself considering how much hype it got afterwards. I always thought a younger Hopkins dismantles Pavlik, but I was surprised he could do it that easily at this age.

Re Corrales-Mayweather........

I should have also added, in my letter above about not using the Corrales fight, that, in the same TV interview, when asked why (in the heck) he had accepted such a fight when he was well over the weight limit and had left the class nearly a year before, he said, with a very wry smile, ".....Well.......they made me an offer I couldn't refuse..." THAT spoke volumes, that the Mayweather cunning management were using Corrales' critical financial state and almost certain immense difficulty in making weight, to force a fight on the one man Mayweather needed to beat, to gain a REAL reputation, a fight which Corrales KNEW he shouldn't accept.

This, of course is tactically clever, but "sporting".............. it stinks.

Calzaghe would not Roy when Roy was in his prime and we got a glimpse of what would have happened in the first round of the fight if it happened 10 years ago. Cong**** to Joe but you can't really credit him with beating the Roy of old.:smileysex

Calzaghe is 10 years younger as well, meaning his speed and reflexes are even better than they are today.

The fight was pure ****. If Jones wasn't just standing there while Calzaghe leaned in with his hands down, then Calzaghe was showboating. It's like Calzaghe promotions paid jones to not fight because this was the worst Jones fight I've ever seen. He didn't even try it seemed. When someone is leaning in with their hands down and you don't hit them, then something is wrong. Also, what the **** is wrong with Jones' corner? They not once tried to stop the bleeding from his left eye, so Jones basically fought (err, stood there) half the fight with one eye...how ****ed up is that? It just seemed like Jones wanted to open that can of whoop ass, but was off in never never land thinking about the **** he was gonna buy with the payoff money.

To me this is a silly comment. How could Jones be "the Roy of old" when the "old" was 10 years in the past. That, as another poster has said, Calzaghe would have also been 10 years younger, really means little, since the "Roy of old", of 10 years ago would have either demolished him, or won almost every round, as he did with everyone else he faced, having then been probably one of the top 4-5 very best fighters in boxing history.

Once he realised Calzaghe's quality, he'd have settled down and used his phenomenal split-second reflexes to time him, catch him coming in and deck him, or at least, make him too wary to mount anything serious.

Many have only little idea of exactly how good Jones actually was, and how he could conduct a fight in any way he chose and still win every or almost every round.

Many believe him to have been the best.

What was Coralles paid then?? and any ideas how much debt he was in and why???
