  • A Guarantee - Roy Jones Won’t Beat Joe Calzaghe

By Brent Matteo Alderson - Boxing fans are talking like Calzaghe-Jones is just a warm up for Jones-Hopkins II, as if the name “Roy Jones” will enable the aged fighter to do something incredible and set up a historic and destined rematch with his epoch rival, Bernard Hopkins. You know, kind of like how Roberto Duran’s upset over Iran Barkley led to a third match between Hands of Stone and Sugar Ray Leonard - nine-years after the famous “No Mas” fight. Those pugilistic followers need to come back to reality because Jones hasn’t been an elite world class fighter since 2003 and has absolutely no chance of beating Joe Calzaghe.

Anyone has a chance in boxing, saying that Jones has no chance is wrong IMO, even though I don't think he'll win, I don't think he has no chance.

I think "no chance" is exaggerating it, but I'd be very surprised if Jones won. He's too far past it. Calzaghe is aging as well, but is much closer to his peak than Jones is. For ****'s sake, Jones was getting with with Tito's jab-off-the-hook, sometimes a double jab off the hook, with some regularity.

I don't agree that 1996 Jones would dominated a 2001 Hopkins or prime Calzaghe. I think he'd win, but both fights would be reasonably competitive (especially Hopkins).

On the basketball reference, I'm actually surprised that at age 32-33, that A.I. is performing at this high level.

I stopped at "exasperated".. Brent Matteo Tut tut tut.... You mean "exacerbated", I'm certain, but, I suppose in certain instances "exasperated" might fit in.

Not in this one....Now I can go back to reading the article.

SURE every fighter has a chance but I also have a chance of winning the lottery but it probably ain't gonna happen. All the above things mentioned are true. RJJ relied on speed and reflexes and those are badly faded and hasn't beat anyone of note in A LONG TIME while Joe C has. Not a fan of eithier fighter but RJJ has ALMOST no chance.

i beg to disagree... jones win over trinidad was not impressive...

jones have a chance to win... if the fight is made ten years ago.

Considering Tito had not fought after his loss three years ago and was an out of shape fatass, Jones' victory was not impressive. Jones did not show any of his past greatness in that fight, this is the reason I agree with this article. Calzaghe will win this fight because Jones is one of the greatest from the 90s and it is almost 2009.

actually this might end up being a real dissaster, Jones seems to have a really weak chin in this part of his career. I wont be suprised if he gets KO around the 7 round

The look on Calzaghe & his pro Euro fan base faces is going to be so funny after Jones dismantles him. What is Joe going to do when he realizes he isn't fighting an old fighter? Calzaghe's victory over Hopkins was no where near as convincing as Roy beat Hopkins. Also Trinidad is arguably a greater fighter than Calzaghe.

                  Trinidad definitely fought better competition.

Wow, i guess u need to read the arcticle. Jones hasnt been the same since the 1st Tarver fight, and didnt look impressive against Handshaw and Prince.

And ur talking about Calzaghe's win again Hopkins wasnt as impressive as the Jones victory. Wow wow wow, that fight took place 15 years ago lol, Jones was monster then. Plus in that fight there wasnt a significant punch thrown.

And your saying the victory against Tito was impressive? besides the fact that Tito started his career at 140, and havent fought in 3 years. Plus his last fight he got dominated badly against Winky Wright at 160, even tho Winky was a Jr.Middleweight at the time
