Hopkins performance was a tribute to Joe Calzaghe

Hops had two great wins before Joe, one after, and it's just Joe he had a bad performance in, no not even he says that.

Calzaghe got caught early by an aggressive punch with a few combinations and quickly adapted his movement to avoid getting tagged. That's something Pavlik couldn't do, he was just there to be hit and not even countering much or well.

Calzaghe's movement, speed and preference for a guy coming to him meant Hops could not fight the same fight he could against a more limited Pavlik.

There's no excuses any more, Calzaghe beat a still elite top p4p guy in Hopkins whom outside of that is beating fellow top guys. Result being, Calzaghe's deservedly the top guy, and is #3 p4p.

I understand what you're saying. Hopkins is a tough guy to fight, Calzaghe was caught coming in, and he's obviously a special fighter.

That said, we have not seen Hopkins throw those type of combinations (granted Pavlik is slow and gangly) since tito and if Hopkins' throse combinations against Calzaghe, I can see Hopkins beating Calzaghe and maybe even tKOing Calzaghe.

good posts F-R-K-O calzaghe was KD but it was a flash KD and he was never really hurt, in fact go back and watch the KD on youtube. once bernard lands the punch he actually leans on joe and because of poor balance he goes down. like you said though it joe had an embarassed look on his face like he had just got reckless, he didn't look hurt. Pavlik on the other hand looked hurt in rounds 2 and 7.

alot of fighters were predicting bernard to come out on top, DLH, margarito, sugar shane all had bernard as the favourte going in. that didn't surprise me these guys know the game and know the sport of boxing, imo they could see past the hype job and realised that Pavlik was a creation of the networks and his promoter.

plus abraham made some interesting comments before the fight - saying tht he had wanted to be the first to give Pavlik a loss.

even calzaghe admitted that it was a great punch and he went down because of it, not because Hopkins was leaning on him or whatever.

You can say that, and you may be right, but he didn't do it and he lost. People should move on. Joe deserved his win, as ugly as the fight was.

I admit that Joe won an ugly fight, but all fans of boxing should want to see a rematch after seeing Hopkins throw combinations like that.

I don't buyt into that, it was a legit knockdown, but it was a flash kd, more a combination of off balance, than a really hard punch. Hence why Calzaghe got up immediately, and looked pissed off about it. Kessler delivered worse, and Joe took it on his feet.

There are 2 different Hopkins. the one that tried to win fights with his slickness against Calzaghe. And the one that beat Pavlik with combination. If Hopkins put punches together like he did against Pavlik against Calzghe, he'd have beaten Calzaghe...

in fairness to Joe though, pavlik is slow and lumbering and a whole different type of fighter.

that said, notice Hopkins was beating Pavlik from pillar to post and Pavlik wasn't down once. The first hard shot Hopkins caught Calzghe with, he went down.

Maybe Calzahe stopped Hopkins from using his combinations. As logic would suggest.

it's plainly obvious that there were 2 different hopkins albeit, facing 2 different fighters. Hopkins could've easily potshotted Pavlik in the same way that he tried to potshot Calzaghe. What changed was Hopkins has changed his style form a potshotter back to a boxer that actually throws combinations.

There is no way we'll ever see them fight again. I would bet money on it. Joe doesn't give people rematches, simple as that. He has rematched one person -- Mario Veit. That was only because he was Joe's mandatory challenger, and had they not fought, Joe would have been stripped of his title.

And yea, Calzaghe is a coward he would never rematch Hopkins. This is why Hopkins is so awesome..he fights anyone at anytime.

He did. Back again to Calzaghe's timing and adjustments. Joe threw a jab, waited for Hopkins' counter, made him miss and THEN threw more shots.
