Having said that Hopkins wins 8 rounds against Pavlik and I love Pavlik.

its pretty simple, jones and whitaker had exciting defensive styles, where mayweather and especially hopkins were just defensive and an eyesore to watch especially for a casual fan. even hardocre fans didnt fall in love with hopkins style immediately.

It makes no sense. Maybe trying to be rational about it is futile?
Which I find weird because Whitaker would dodge a 5-7 punch combination and clown around after. Mayweather would block and respond with counterz. After seeing almost every Pernell and Mayweather fight...I've noticed that Pernell is the guy taking more of the hitz and getting dropped about 12 or more timez in his career.

Honestly, I belive that Pernell's defense is said to be better then Mayweather's...is because his defense was more entertaining to watch and damn impressive to see a fighter dodge wicked combinations thrown at him. Still from what I've seen...Mayweather got hit less.

I would say Duran and B-Hop are VERY underated when defense is spoken about.

Hopkins is awful to watch. The Taylor fights, The Winky fight, the Zaghe fight, etc., etc.
Hopkins has participated in the most boring fights in recent memory. Only Ruiz can compete with him when it comes to boredom.

Because those guys are flashier with their defenses, Whitaker with his showboating, his dipsey-doos, Jones with his speed and showboating. You don't see Hopkins or Mayweather doing those things, their defense is more subtle, people like flashiness.

Just throwing a name out there but Marlon Starling had great defense, and barely gets a mention for it.

Most overrated defense of all time is James Toney's. I have like 50 fights of his and let me tell you that shoulder roll is cool as **** but he's eaten so much leather in his career it's crazy and people make him out to be this defensive wizard.

The thing about Toney is that he can get hit by the first shot but you rarely see him get hit by a follow up, that's what makes his defense so good, the first shot doesn't carry as much power and doesn't do as much damage and leaves opponents more open to counters when they miss with the second.

Watch the Tiberi, Thadzi, Jones, Griffin, Nunn , Johnson fights and see how much he gets hit.

His defense wasn't as good as it was in the later years, watching his early fights and later fights, his defense improved a lot, Tiberi, Nunn and Johnson happened when he was still developing his defense, although you could see some of the shoulder roll technique displayed in each fight. And even then, he was making Nunn miss. He was also in horrible condition for the Tiberi fight.

Griffin rarely hit him with more than one shot at a time, and Toney won those fights in my eyes.

He was weight drained for Jones and Jones is so fast there's no way to react to all the stuff he throws.

Thadzi was just a bad performance, Toney had no business losing to him.
