Why do some guys get credit for defense but others don't?

Calzaghe has never been known for his defense? I haven't seen a good display of defense coming from CalzagheLast edited by El Dominicano; 10-10-2008, 09:50 PM.Comment

Pernell Whitaker got hit more because he stood toe to toe much more than Floyd Mayweather, or when he was caught ducking down like against Julio Cesar Vasquez. But most of Pernell Whitaker's knockdowns were due to him being off balance. He was never hurt from any of his knockdown's except against Roger Mayweather and Felix Trinidad.Which I find weird because Whitaker would dodge a 5-7 punch combination and clown around after. Mayweather would block and respond with counterz. After seeing almost every Pernell and Mayweather fight...I've noticed that Pernell is the guy taking more of the hitz and getting dropped about 12 or more timez in his career.
Honestly, I belive that Pernell's defense is said to be better then Mayweather's...is because his defense was more entertaining to watch and damn impressive to see a fighter dodge wicked combinations thrown at him. Still from what I've seen...Mayweather got hit less.
I would say Duran and B-Hop are VERY underated when defense is spoken about.
But i still do like Floyd Mayweather and i don't find most of his fights boring at all his fights against.
Jesus Chavez
Arturo Gatti
DeMarcus Corley
Angel Manfredy
Jose Luis Castillo 1
Zab Judah
Phillip N'Dou
Emanuel Burton
Diego Corrales
Were all entertaining IMO.Comment

you obviously do not follow or understand boxingHopkins and Mayweather are hated because they go out of their way to NOT put on a show.
With fighters like Whitaker and Roy Jones Jr, and Ivan Calderon, they make a showcase of their skills. They clown around, they show off, do flashy and exciting stuff.
Hopkins and Mayweather don't. They lower the pace of the fight as low as they can, throw as few punches as they can to win a round, and putting on a show for the fans never even enters their mind.
And at least with Bernard you get a little bit of that shoulder shuffle every once in a while, and he doesn't pretend like he is going to be exciting in the pre-fight build up.
Floyd runs off his mouth, claims he is going to make it a war, then fights like a ***** and doesn't do any showboating.Comment

He's gotten hit with counter rights all through his career.
He doesn't get hit much but it's not because of defense, it's because of the amount of punches he throws, it just overwhelms his opponents and keeps them on the defensive thus making his offense his defense.Comment

Even the greatest defensive fighters can fail. Just imagine if the big punch that Mayweather Jr got hit with by Corley and staggered was from a puncher as strong as Hearns. He would also have been out. Now, imagine that Corley had something like a ten inch reach advantage, if not more, and something like a ten inch height advantage as well and was in the absolute peak of his prime while Mayweather and his best days were well past him. Would he have lasted very long? It always happens. Didn't Jones Jr get done in the same way? Pep also got knocked out. Whitaker nearly did and that was only two divisions up from his starting weight, not five or so (Duran started at featherweight and that fight was at junior middle). It wasn't against one of the hardest P4P punchers in the history of the sport who was literally twice his size. Though it was pretty close. Imagine if the punch that knocked Whitaker down was the same punch that Duran got hit with. Lights out.
You ever see Herol Graham fight? Incredible defensive fighter. Amazing. He was giving a great and vicious beating to Julian Jackson and at the end of the round in which his corner said they were going to stop it, Graham was caught with that one big punch that by a lot of other fighters may not have knocked him out cold. It was from Jackson though and it looked as if he had died. Only happened once.
Getting caught by one of the greatest ever power punchers, who nalso happened to be a freakishly amazing boxer in his prime, after a near twenty year pro career, after moving up more about five weight divisions and being well past your best is not exactly going to make him a bad defensive fighter or what you think equals overrated. Try watching some more of his fights. Watch Leonard/Duran one, or Duran De Jesus 3, Duran/Palomino. He barely gets hit cleanly in any of these fights. It might be harder to see because he's inside firing away and not outside doing nothing but playing defense, but it's there.Comment
