Yeah maybe. Too bad no-ones going to beat Calzaghe so they'll just have to go on pretending they're right, even though they're not!

I always wonder on what basis it is that US Calzaghe critics concluded that he was rubbish. After all most have only ever seen him hammer Lacy, outclass Kessler and outwork B-Hop. I dunno, maybe I'm being too generous, maybe they only saw B-Hop and think thats the best Joe ever fought in his career.

Well Calzaghe didn't look exactly impressive in his first showing on American soil and he was never willing to come over here when he was in his prime. He was knocked down, roughed up and out boxed by Bernard Hopkins, who was 43 years of age and got the better of Calzaghe when he had the energy to do it. I know Calzaghe is good and i rank him as the greatest super middleweight, but he didn't look impressive. A fighter that is fighting in America for the first time wants to impress us US fans and he didn't do that. What pound for pound quality fighter did Joe beat that were in their prime? Hopkins, Jones, Toney ect has those names and that's why i rate them higher.

Sneaking in the occassional clear cut right hand is all gravy but I wouldn't say that was outboxed, I'd say he just snuck in the sneaky right hand with decent success. He refused to engage for the most part, and he refused to up his work rate. One guy was trying to fight the other was waiting for the afforementioned to **** up enough times to lose him the fight. **** that. Credit to Hopkins but he lost but succeeded as usual for the old hops made his opponent look like arse.

Indeed. But it seems a bit strange to me that US boxing fans take the view that in order to be good you have to be so on American soil. That is rather a narrow minded viewpoint is it not, and it doesn't really have much to do with whether the fighter is actually any good or not. Presumably people have seen what Calzaghe did to Lacy and Kessler, and its not as though you can talk about 'home-cooking' in those cases, both were excellent performances plain and simple.

This is all very well, but surely you noticed that there were two boxers in that fight, and that Calzaghe pressured Bernard so hard he had a hell of a time doing anything else other than trying to shut Calzaghe down? Its not as though Bernard's lack of output was solely down to stamina, Calzaghe was constantly trying to punch him in the head and Bernard had to stop him! Bernard showed major signs of tiredness in the tenth round, not the fourth, and even then he wasn't exactly completely gassed.

I saw a quote from Bernard recently saying "I don't try to keep up with them, I try to make them keep up with me" i.e he tries to slow them down, and against Calzaghe he couldn't, so he lost.

Agree to the OP. I don't rule Roy out simply because he is Roy but I haven't seen anything from him for years that suggests he is going to win this fight. Hope I'm wrong though.
