Whilst I agree, I seriously doubt the amount of people that will accept it even if Roy does perform well. In so many peoples eyes prime Roy was god, and Roy now is simply pointless by comparison. It's wrong, take away the comparison he's still a top boxer.

I hope Roy performs well throughout, but in the likely scenario he gasses or is made to look bad, you'll hear ppl criticise Roys performance, more than you will compliment Calzaghe's. Joe makes most guys look bad and tires many out, so it wouldn't be massively different if he made it happen to Roy, not that most ppl will accept that even a bit.

I can't see what will change this, I just hope ppl can judge the fighters without coloured specs on, and give both guys the assessments they deserve based on all factors. I think it'll be a B+ performance for both guys.

Even as European I'm still rooting for RJ... god damn... I mean he made some smart moves... even though he talks about the old RJ is back, he knows that it ain't true... and he shows that... he worked on his defense and his defense will never be flawless but he keeps his arms up. It really depends on Roy cause Calzaghe always comes in shape... it all depends on Roy... if he still get this hunger for a win... that he wants to make money and good looking by doing it is clear... but the question I have about him is... if it's get ugly does he still have the fire in him to maybe even get cut or busted open by trying something... by standing his ground or does he move away... and I think that if he does that and should win it you have to put him right on top with all the greats... because Calzaghe is not the greatest... but he's a good fighter and he proved it against Hopkins... yes looked bad but still won... ask other dudes how hard it is... Calzaghe will also not move away he will bring it to him with workrate... so if Roy still got it in him and wants to win it it will be not enough to throw two or three combos a round... he really has to match at least 50% of Calzaghe workate...

I hope he still has it... if it ain't happens in MSG where else should it be... holy ground... like I said... this is a fight where we going to find out something about RJ and not about Calzaghe... I can't wait... let the best man win *loooooooooooool*

I don't even want to se them fight. I have much respect for Joe and Roy. this is similiar to seeing Hearns and Sugar fight their rematch. I was a Sugar fan who grew to being a Hearns fan too. I understood why Hearns wanted the rematch. I didn't want to see either get knocked out, and that goes for Joe and Roy. Hopefully the decision is a draw, or that they both ko each other lol.

You'd be surprised. If Jones brings his A game and so does Calzaghe, Joe will get props from the US media. Book it. Contrary to popular belief, most are fair.

Calzaghe got plenty of props for Kessler, so much so that he leaped into the top five p4p. So obviously he gets props. What we won't do is go overboard in lauding a lackluster performance against perhaps his best opponent, a 43yr old who faded even before Calzaghe really got going.

And now a Roy Jones Jr. who has been thought finished since gas was a decent price. I mean, if Joe Calzaghe wants to enhance his legacy, this is not the way to do it. And it's fights like these - as his career winds down - that underscores the belief he was never interested in daring to be great.

So Jones MUST look good in order for Joe to get props; he can't wilt, look like a scared kid whenever his opponent throws; his reflexes can't look terribly off, and he's got to actually fight!

          We'll see.

I see where you coming from boof... I like them both as well... RJ more but I respect Calzaghe as well... for me personally it is important to see that outta Roy... the thing is that some folks are so talented that they never have to deal with adversity... and this now is Roys chance... he was knocked down... didn't come up... he build himself up again... a little bit more defensive minded which is a right for a sharp reflex athletic kind of fighter after his prime... and now he has his chance to make himself an ATG with beating Calzaghe... Calzaghe is a big step up to everyone he fought after getting KO'd. Calzaghe is the man at SMW. So I'm looking forward...

On the other hand I'm also afraid that this is going to stink big time... if Roy finds out that he ain't really wants no part of this anymore... then he will move and Calzaghe will follow him and it's going to be really boring... because I really don't see a ko... with the exception if Roy Jones fades bad... because even if Roy should hurt Calzaghe... it seems that he ain't got the killer instict anymore...

I can see where you coming from boof... but for Roy Jones sakes... I need to see this fight *looooooooooooooooooooool*

Nicely outlined. I wish I could have more faith in ppl judging fairly on the performances of Joe or Roy but I don't see how one could. A lot of that probably comes from this forum which isn't the most accurate parameter, but somewhat reflective. I've been pleasantly surprised that Kessler has become well regarded and received more coverage despite not doing great things since. But when it comes to Hops or Roy, it's like just because there past prime, ppl say their totally shot so meaningless wins. It's like ppl can't find an in between. It's not ideal Hops and Roy are past prime, but it's also not as bad as made out, and Joes old too!

It leaves you wanting a close fight with your guy in trouble at times to perhaps convince more ppl the opponent is competitive at that level, which isn't a nice position. It also leaves you wanting him to face say Pavlik to silence more doubters. At the end of the day if Joe beat Pavlik he'd suddenly become 1 dimensional, too young, lower weight etc. So I'm actually kinda past caring because it's largely so irrelevant what happens in-front of peoples eyes in terms of the who or the performances, most already have a view and line of excuses which they won't shift much.

Pessimist in that regard I guess. But it'll be a deserving close fight between to past prime but still top boxers. I also hope Roy fights on once or twice to show he really is still up there and competitive.

Yeah, I agree. I think we have to find the fine line between shot and "great win" for guys like Hopkins & Jones. No, I don't think Hopkins was the same (43!) but it is a solid win for Joe. And not so much the name as much the performance, lackluster as it was. It wasn't Joe's best and early on he appeared outclassed but he found a way to win. Hopkins tired but Hopkins is crafty - he knows how to win rounds by doing the bare minimum. Joe adjusted and, in the process, he became the first person to BREAK Hopkins. That stood out in my mind.

I believe he beats Pavlik and I believe Pavlik is a touch overrated. I would love to see Joe tangle with the Dawson-Tarver winner or even Glen Johnson. That, for me, would seal it.
