bernard used to give head in exchange for cigarettes in prison. his nickname in there was Mr. Blow Hop in references to the bubble gum lollipops.

No, we can use boxrec, which isn't very certain I know, but surely boxrec can change opinion, Tyrone Brunson 19-0-0 (19 ko's), sounds good eh?, now tell me you haven't looked this guy up on boxrec and made an opinion on him.

Which is all i stated. My opinion. Joes resume got better later on imo, Warren got him all the best fights at the later stages of his career.

I never said that. In fact in the lead up to the Hopkins fight i spent a long time arguing the solidity of his resume to people who said that.

I know, I was just talking generally, trying to get away from this argument, But you have to agree that 90% of people on these boards have a go at Calzaghe's resume.

Hating Hopkins and saying "He only fought welterweights blah blah" is ****ing pathetic. Plain and simple.

          Joe Calzaghe beat Bernard Hopkins.

They say Bernard Hopkins was better when he was younger. But, the video proves Joe Calzaghe punched very hard when he was younger.

I think there is more proof Joe Calzaghe is better than Bernard Hopkins.
He hasn't knocked out more people actually. Joe doesn't hve power anymore, f you even try to say Joe punches hard these days your crazy.

Hopkisn has 5 losses, 1 when he was unexperienced fighting at an un natural weight. One to Jones Jr, who won a heavyweight title. 2 to Taylor which were controversial and one to Calzaghe which was very close.

There isn't more proof at all. You just want there to be..

          The 2 are very similar

How was Hopkins regarded in the US when he was on the way up? From what I read here, he wasn't really thought to be anything special, and this continued quite far into his run of defences. Is that right?

In the UK Calzaghe was always regarded as an outstanding prospect, right from his amateur days when in three consecutive years he won the amateur championship in consecutively higher weight classes. After beating Eubank he was supposed to go on and be a star, but he lost momentum after the Reid fight with some injuries and average performances. In some ways its actually quite surprising that he's now become this megastar because even though he recovered from this and performed excellently for the remainder of his career, there just wasn't that 'defining fight' for him. I think its actually lucky that Lacy and Kessler came aong when they did.

                he wasn't/isn't special.

the middleweight division was utter crap during his reign.

joppy , holmes and hopkins were 3 long reigning champions for the wba , wbc and ibf.

the fact that holmes and joppy reigned for years at 160 shows the quality of opposition at 160 at the time.

I don't know what you are getting at with that.

Wilfred Benitez was 17 years old when he defeated long reigning champion and hall of famer Antonio Cervantes.
Mike Tyson was 20 years old when he knocked out title holder Trevor Berbick.
Floyd Patterson was 21 years old won the world title by KO'ing Archie Moore.

Hopkins was boxing before he went to prison yes, but there is quite a difference between a long, successful amateur career like Calzaghe's (fighting and winning against the likes of Chris Byrd) and Hopkins training boxing in prison and before it.

It's remarkable that a late starter like Hopkins without much of an amateur career to speak of managed to become a long-reigning world champion who is still fighting 20 years after.
